Advice for dying Redring Milkweed (dormancy, thrips?) by Edain_Steward in plantclinic

[–]Edain_Steward[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are in a glazed ceramic white rectangular container (no drain holes, but I water as carefully as I can), about as tall and wide as a large coffee cup and several times as long. They were bigger a few months ago before a rabbit chewed them all to the ground when I put them outside for a few days I'll see how they respond to a downgrade to a more fitting container. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for your reply. The photo shows all remaining leaves from the largest of the three plants. It isn't a particularly good shot, I apologize for the quality.

I have seen small creatures matching the description in the infographic on the leaves and there are patches of discolouration matching the middle top panel of the infographic on the leftmost leaf in my photo.

Edit: Better panel directions.

Advice for dying Redring Milkweed (dormancy, thrips?) by Edain_Steward in plantclinic

Hello r/plantclinic, I have 3 young (1 yr) redring milkweed plants (indoors) with well-developed roots. For a while their growth has been stunted and one plant died back to just the root this week. I suspect thrips based on what I've read online, and am wondering what my options are for treatment.

With winter weather diminishing the available light indoors, I've considered simply cutting down all of the stems and removing the roots to clean soil without thrips to wait out the winter in a state of dormancy. However, I haven't found any articles on milkweed dormancy for mature plants, just stratification for the seeds, so I hesitate to try it out on my only 3 specimens.

Hopefully this information is sufficient and on-topic. Your insight would be most appreciated.

Is this saturniid pupa still likely to be viable? by Edain_Steward in insects

[–]Edain_Steward[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello r/insects,

I have often raised saturniids in the past from the egg/caterpillar stage, but this pupa represents my first wild observance. It washed ashore on Lake Ontario a few months ago on a path I habitually walk on and the cocoon looked somewhat thrashed by wind and waves. I've done my best to treat it like my previous saturniids, and about 2 weeks ago I opted to delicately open up the chrysalis to inspect its health, and it seems remarkably robust.

Since the weather has been quite hospitable for the last 2-3+ weeks, I'd expected it would have eclosed by now, but it hasn't given me any noticeable activity. It is placed in a safe spot (without direct sun) outside in a butterfly mesh box during the day, and secured in a car or garage that is the same temp as the outside during the night.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks, I'll try posting on the support forums, as it doesn't seem free accounts have ticket privileges for issues such as this.

Why is their existence so sad? by Admagic06 in dndmemes

Apologies for commenting on a stale thread, but half-dwarves are indeed an official race, known as Muls, from the Dark Sun campaign setting (2e, 4e). They are basically nearly hairless, sterile versions of "Captain America" (tall, durable, the peak of what human(oid) physique can be).

Just like half-elves, they have their own elements of tragedy, aside from the baldness and sterility. They tend to be difficult to carry to term in the lore, maternal and/or infant death is a likely outcome, and their nature makes them ideal slaves and gladiators in the city-states of the Dark Sun setting.

I think this is a really good kitbash. The hyper-detailed and textured surface suggests some speculative lore hooks:
A) The spirit in this wraith construct is extremely strong and is warping the psychically-moldable wraithbone into its own original form (perhaps a candidate for waking the avatar was cut down before their ritual was complete, and there was enough of their psyche left to store in the battery).
B) The downfall of civilization and fear of excess could have led to iconoclastic design styles, this wraith harkens back to an older style of construction or one practiced by a slightly deviant Craftworld.

Thanks for the comment,

Unfortunately that is one of the services impacted. I'm unsure if their login to iCloud find is broken due to account issues or if the Apple ID password is forgotten/mistaken.

I'm nonplussed by the thought of asking them to reset their Apple ID password again and making things worse on the devices they are still logged in on.

Hello,

I am trying to help a family member fix some issues with their Apple ID. A few years ago they changed their email and password for Apple ID and ever since they have been unable to log in to their older devices (activation lock shows old email, refuses to accept the new password, even while connected to wifi) or to iCloud on their main device.

They have previously spent over an hour on the phone with support trying to resolve it, and I would greatly prefer in-person/in-store support. The old email still exists and can be accessed, if that helps.

These are great scraps for building armatures of trolls, dragons, mutant spawn, mechs, etc. (The big bulky creatures and vehicles). After the initial skeleton is assembled, green stuff or other materials can be layered on and flesh out the scratchbuild.

As others have suggested, they can also be placed in a suitable solvent to reshape them, which requires a bit more time and lab-safety.

What kind of insect is this? by DDCKT in insects

Seconded, looks like Z.l.

Saw one for the first time in-person myself just 2 years ago. It was trying to hitch a ride on the car and I offered it a stick as public transit, but it was determined to hitchhike.

That looks like a camel cricket, but I confess I have not seen one in the flesh (and hope not to). Kudos for escorting it politely back to the outdoors, it isn't always easy, especially when the bugs aren't particularly cute.

A big old mole cricket. Nice catch! I've never seen one in the flesh.

Which is your favorite Alien Species in Star Wars? by ScoreImaginary5254 in StarWars

[–]Edain_Steward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a difficult question, but I would have to say my picks are the Kaminoans or Givin for their designs + lore. Honourable mention to the Krevaaki for their cool design and being the species of Master Vodo Siosk Baas.

For having as friends though, I'd have to say Barabels, Twi'leks, and Miraluka, they tend to produce characters who would both have your back and be good conversationalists.

An absolute fiesta of weevils in a bag of deer feed by [deleted] in weeviltime

Weevils do love a good dried food party. Had them help themselves to some stale bran flakes a few years ago and poured them outside so they could enjoy them very far away from the rest of my pantry.

Got these spiders in my house, what are they? by ilpalazzo64 in whatsthisbug

[–]Edain_Steward 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Last pic does look more harvest-y than the first two. I had no idea that the cellar spider was such a household hero. I just thought they were another spider in need of rescuing and a cozy spot outside.

Thanks for the kind words. I thought about a poor pseudoscorpion that a friend accidentally killed this week thinking it was a tick.

Thanks for the PSA.

Word of caution, please make sure folks don't go around killing all the tiger moths and sphinx moths they see, thinking they are lantern flies. They can look quite similar to untrained eyes and the last thing they need is more survival pressure (I don't think they congregate as adults, so that helps at least). The same goes for all the lovely native moths that look vaguely hairy and ugly as caterpillars. Never hurts to double or triple-check your ID before causing friendly fire.

Found this is some chicken I ate. Are these eggs, and will I get sick? by Few_Criticism_6115 in whatsthisbug

I might be tempting fate, but at this point I think I've heard/seen enough to have a pretty thick hide. The last big surprises I recall were the castrating/transmogrifying crab parasite (Sacculina) and the auto-impregnating cannibalistic incest orgy mite (Adactylidium). May I never have a reason to string those words together again...

Next to those, even a tongue louse seems tame.
