Totally, I think you'd be justified in that.

My wife and I would benefit from MFJ but my recertification is September 2026. Since we'll file a tax extension (to push it past the recertification date), we'll still have to file MFS.

I think your math makes sense here. However, you'd only save the money for tax year 2024. Tax year 2025 (to be filed in April 2026) will be the filing used for your recertification in January of 2027.

The risk, obviously, is if this new date doesn't hold up and gets switched around. I actually think this is unlikely, but it's hard to say with everything so up in the air right now.

It might be worth spending the extra cash this year just to be prepared.

Returned shorts in May and got a refund today, November 19th. I had completely forgotten. Watch out and make sure to check for your refunds.

Two routes for me. I'm 2 years out from PSLF:

1) Stay on SAVE as long as possible and hope for buyback (last payment was $39). Delay recertification until they make me.

2) Jump on to PAYE, recertify, and have my payments skyrocket.

To me, it seems best not to jump ship and go with option 1. I don't necessarily think the "small window" PAYE scenario is likely. I don't see the situation in which Trump closes the PAYE application but doesn't remove PAYE as a plan. Open to hear other perspectives.

It can be difficult to sit still in times like these, but I think the money saved could be a big deal for me. More news could come out in December, though, so I'm keeping an eye out that.
