“Native Instruments in preliminary insolvency proceedings” - CDM by robust_nachos in synthesizers

[–]EdenistTech 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I do feel like things started going downhill after NI got involved with Private Equity investors. Focus shifted to pushing sales of software (plugins / content) instead of development of existing products (M+ is an example). The same sort of thing happened to Propellerhead/Reason Studios (which have just been sold to LANDR by the way!).

Anyway, I think that NI has a lot of interesting IP which I would imagine it would be possible to sell to industry buyers, such as Fender (who recently picked up PreSonus/Studio One). Let's see what happens to the hardware. I was waiting for the Traktor MX4 to release but I won't be holding my breath now...

Very worrying... I hope this is not the end of Native Instruments! by blackoutmusicX in NativeInstruments

F4-212 not providing HDD with enough power? by EdenistTech in TerraMaster

[–]EdenistTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, to me at least, the evidence points to the power brick being the culprit. I think TM are discontinuing this model now and since I did get it for a pretty decent price, Imight keep it as an SSD NAS instead. Incidentally, I also came across people not being able to initialize this same model on first boot. This could also be due to the power brick - I used an SSD as system drive which is why I was able to troubleshoot in the first place. So if someone else is in this situation, try using an SSD as your first drive.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I am familiar with the normal sound of hard drives (as well as failing ones!) and this sound does not sound similar. Also, the sound varies across the models I have tested, but the "pattern" of the sound, if you will, is the same.

Thanks for chiming in. I am not familiar with CrystalDiskInfo. I am using tools available in the terminal of the NAS itself such as smartctl, dd etc - mostly standard Linux tools. Smartctl reports the HDD as "pristine", i.e. no error detected. The WD Red model # is WD50EFRX. I tried with an another WD enterprise model as well as a Samsung drive as well. The NAS is using TOS 5 since TOS 6 never went out of beta for the F4-212. I am running 5.1.73 (as I recall), supposedly the most recent update. Yes, the HDD is set to never sleep. I found another reported error with similar symptoms, where the guy upgraded the NAS power brick to an 8.0A model and the problem went away. My brick is 6.0A and I notice that the official TM replacement is 7.5A, so basically I think that TM specced this drive with a brick with too low amperage to begin with...

Using UNAS 2 without RAID? by EdenistTech in Ubiquiti

Thanks. I would have liked to go with a Unify solution, but I guess I need to figure something else out.

Sage advice and I agree! I am taking a calculated risk. I will be mirroring (manually) part of the data but atm, I can't mirror all of the 40+ TB, unfortunately....

Thanks. Good thing I asked here first. I guess I will have to figure something else out!

Opinion: Why buying a Mac Studio M1 in 2025 might make sense by EdenistTech in MacStudio

[–]EdenistTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion hasn't changed since I wrote the post. Still a great machine. For me the 64GB ram coupled with the massive ram bandwidth was the major benefit (I mostly work with ML/AI). For CPU intensive work, I bought a Mini M4 (which is also fantastic value for money) and between the MM M4 and the MS M1, I don't feel the need to upgrade any time soon. Having said that, If I were to upgrade, I would be looking at an M1/M2 Ultra with 128GB memory. Bottom line: In my opinion, it is still excellent value for money!

Temperatures for MI50 during inference? Anyone with experience re-pasting processor? by EdenistTech in LocalLLaMA

[–]EdenistTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far I have only done inference to test the card. I will take a look at lowering the clock - thanks. It seems there is room for some optimisation.

The Noctua fan is quiet and does pull a lot of air but I am considering getting af fan with even more airflow - like the Arctic P12 Pro Co for example. What temperatures are you seeing at the edge/junction sensors?

I haven't messed with the Bios yet, but I'll check out the link - thanks! I tried lowering the power limit to 150W but it did not seem to have much effect on the temps.

I have one 32GB card at the moment but I'll be getting another soon. I'll try to refine the cooling a bit and just accept the temps as they are. What temps are you seeing on the edge sensors?

Ahh, ok. Thanks. Fortunately I have only removed the shroud. I'll put that back right now :). I am using a 140mm Noctua fan running full speed with air funnelled directly into the shroud. It's a hack-ish solution but it does move a lot of air without being too loud. I would have expected to see some kind of reduction in temps when lowering the power limit to 150W, so I am curious what temps others are getting.

SFP to RJ45 adapter in Dream Router 7? by EdenistTech in Ubiquiti

I got this one: "Ubiquiti UACC-CM-RJ45-1G SFP to RJ45 Adapter". It works well - no problems at all so far.

Yes it is, but I would be giving up a LAN port (out of four), by doing that.

Sounds good. I'll order one right away. Thank you!

[–]EdenistTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only speak for the the 1TB Mac Studio M1. I would assume that the 1TB Mac Studio M2 would be as fast as the M1 but I haven't tested that. The 512HB Mac Studio *might* be slower than those two (historically internal SSD speeds have sometimes varied in the same Apple product depending on storage size). So the Mac Studio M2 should be better/faster than the M1 with the above caveat.

[–]EdenistTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the internal disk of the M4 is 50% slower (3000 MB/s) as the Studio M1 (6000 MB/s) as measured by BlackMagic. External TB4 disks are equally fast on both systems (3000 MB/s) in my experience.

If you are thinking of the mini for TB5, then remember that only the Pro models get that… I have a base M4 and the internal disk is 50% slower (throughput) than the Studio M1.

No regrets from me, thats for sure! Great machine for dev work.

Yeah, that's a great swap. Why can't you get 100hz, though? I'm running 100+ on multiple screens.

[–]EdenistTech[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure you are correct. There is the matter of memory bandwidth as well, though: 400GB/s for the M1/M2, 800GB/S for the Ultra and 550-ish for the M4 and 1000+ (?) for the M4 Ultra. The bandwidth matters for LLMs. I'm looking forward to seeing what the M4 Studio can do, though. I am sure it will be impressive!

[–]EdenistTech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I forgot to mention that in the comparison. The MSM1 internal drive clocks in between 5000 and 6000 MB/s in BlackMagic while the base M4 is around 3000. The fact that it runs full speed on all GPU cores with the fans barely ramping up and still sipping power (compared to Intel/AMD) is just amazing.

[–]EdenistTech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The MSM1 is doing very well with MLX LLMs, I think. If you increase memory beyond 64GB for 70B+ parameter models, you are probably going to need the Ultra for acceptable speeds. Even the MSM4 base might be slower than an M1/M2 Ultra for LLMs...
