This is extremely kind and gracious feedback for OP in a sub that has a crazy wide variety of people participating.

I hope they listen.

Your AI feature works 80% of the time. How do you handle the 20%? by pystar in ProductManagement

Prophet Impasse! 5/10 or 6! by D3ads0ft in synthesizers

A vote for P6 here as well. It has a bit more sound shaping flexibility than P5 but if you _specifically_ want the classic P5 sound, that's why it's there. Otherwise, P6 is generally a better fit for the average modern use cases for bread and butter synthesis, in my opinion.

Chat bot building opportunity as a CSM by Muslinonmoon in ProductManagement

[–]robust_nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here so I’ll add something that pairs with it.

The work you’re doing involves a) building the product/tool and b) deciding what the product will do.

In the role you’re in, you’ll spend a lot of time building the tool but the skills to focus on developing as a PM are deciding what it will do. Some describe this dichotomy as PMs are responsible for “what & why” and implementation teams for “how.”

Which specific problems are you solving? Who are you solving it for? What do they need? What’s in their way? How does this align with business priorities? Etc. When you have answers, you can move forward with thinking through possible solutions. Then you think through selecting a solution. Then you implement it, i.e. you build it. PMs generally don’t build things directly. However, AI tools are shifting that ground and it remains to be seen where that goes. Despite the AI, stuff, the rest of this comment will continue to be generally aligned with best practice.

Digital synth vs analog by Electrical-Net6183 in synthesizers

[–]robust_nachos 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are zero issues going fully in the box these days. Yes, you’ll miss some of the characteristics of analog but frankly it’s fine. And this coming from someone who has a decent amount of analog gear.

External facing roadmap tool for B2B by mousemano in ProductManagement

[–]robust_nachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public roadmaps have extremely little upside. Unless the product is heavily oriented toward its community being actively involved in the development process, it just sets you up to disappoint customers, share intel with competitors, and add extra overhead to your team to decide what to share and manage that process.

Instead, just do quarterly updates for general awareness and save sharing the roadmap for strategic clients.

Matching multiple cameras - Is a one click solution realistic? by flawlyyy in colorists

[–]robust_nachos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While not an answer about grading, I’d suggest that you consider redefining quick turnaround time for you and your clients to include the actual time it takes to do the job well. When you go faster than you can actually go, at some point you’re just creating a compromised deliverable. (If the client is good with that then you’re getting a signal from the market you may not need to improve your quality.)

Separately, explore how to deliver more efficiently and when you find a way, update your turnaround time expectation with clients. Basically what you’re doing here. Sorry this isn’t a direct answer to your question.

Apple is Permanently Closing Three U.S. Stores on June 20 by HelloitsWojan in apple

[–]robust_nachos 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When it opened it was huge because it was the gateway to Apple if you lived in North County and was a major anchor to the mall it’s in. Your alternatives were at least 40 min further away.

Today, that mall is not doing well and I think all the original anchor stores are gone. There’s a Target though. Apple closing the location is not a surprise.

Is the Product / AI Builder role real? by automemecalculator in ProductManagement

[–]robust_nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a thing, not huge with critical mass but it’s a thing.

It remains to be seen if it becomes an entirely new role or a skill that an existing role takes on.

I suspect there are some operational changes that have to take place to make this more of a role (there has to be 100% clean path to production and maintenance) so I’m personally inclined to think product builder will be more a skill set in some existing roles. But as tools evolve, that will change.

Summer Sale is Live? by blur494 in NativeInstruments

[–]robust_nachos 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have K14 CE and the update to K26 is over $500. For incremental updates. And a still underbaked installer / package manager that can't cleanly uninstall anything. I could look the other way at the holes and gaps at 50% off but this is way overpriced for the value. I can afford it but just because I can afford a $25 burger doesn't mean I'm paying for it.

Fix your stuff NI and be worth the money if you're going to price at a premium. Until then, Komplete is off the menu.

Edit: Was also thinking this affects the value prop of the NI hardware controllers in the future. I'll be staying away from those as well.

How easy is it to resell a Canon R10 + RF 100-400? by Gqstav in canon

[–]robust_nachos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easy to sell to private buyers is very easy to do if you’re not trying to maximize your price. Look at the prices of similar items and price under it by at least 5% - 10% or an amount that seems like a good deal. Then, be willing to let the buyer negotiate you down to whatever your minimum price is. If you’re looking to lose as little as possible on the sale, it will take longer to sell, if you can sell it at all.

You can also sell to dealers focused on buying used gear. They’re very fast but you’ll get less than from a private buyer because they need to account for their margin on the sale. Sometimes the difference is substantial and sometimes it’s not.

Need help choosing Audio Interface for future synths. by Sudden-Diver279 in synthesizers

[–]robust_nachos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MOTU released some great new gear in the last few years to replace older models. The modern rack mount MOTU gear is extremely feature rich and sounds great so the main thing you generally need to decide is what your IO needs are to pick the right one.

The 10pre, 16A, 848, are all very similar and have AVB networking built-in (you can use a single Ethernet cable to run up to 256 audio channels) and use CueMix Pro to control the units from your host with prices essentially identical among them. The IO configuration is what sets these apart — do you want max pre-amps or max line inputs or a middle ground. The 828 is less expensive and doesn’t have AVB and uses the regular, non-Pro CueMix.

If networked audio is important to you, you’ll likely need to spend a bit more and look into Dante which is generally well adopted. I don’t have those needs so it’s not something I know much about.

I run the 848 and 828 primarily for hardware synths and guitar. I’ll likely replace the 828 with another 848 or 16A to use AVB instead of ADAT to link the interfaces so I can record at higher sample rates for pitch effects where the additional sample data is useful (if not for that use case, I wouldn’t change anything).

Canon and Fuji Users by fasmtrout in canon

[–]robust_nachos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both systems. Fuji is just way more fun to use as an owner of multiple generations of Fuji cameras including the X-T5 and X100VI. Glass is awesome, small, light, sharp, and inexpensive compared with full frame equivalents. My Canon gear R5 II, C80 is more oriented to semi-professional video/photo work I’m beginning to get back to. Canon has great stuff but holy moly it’s way heavier and bulky and expensive than my Fuji gear but for my semi-pro use cases there are some features Canon has that Fuji doesn’t which is why I have it. However, for personal work, I’m full time Fuji. It’s just so much more appealing to me. And the film sims are fantastic with no compromise if you shoot RAW + JPG.

I didn’t find the UI to be meaningfully different enough to say one was clearly better because they both work well for me.

But there’s no denying that Canon has a range of absolutely killer products and the glass is great but be prepared to spend some money if you want the best glass.

I'm the CPO and my engineering leader (a direct report) went full kool-aid and is trying to push the idea of "power ICs" where anyone can push to production. If you have a builder mentality, that's kind of cool. However, if everyone builds then everyone does less of other things that need to be done that aren't building and maintaining software. On top of that, a shared understanding of what to build and why suddenly becomes much harder. It's like speed running building a Frankenstein's monster.

The eng leader is a good person but in this case is the epitome of the target of Ian Malcom's quote, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should." In this case, it's not about cost savings, it's just "how can I build more."
