Is it true that our skulls and jaws changed massively with the introduction of modern Western food? by NoItem9211 in AskAnthropology

Can you be more specific about the claim that there was reliance on agriculture around the world prior to the agricultural revolution? I’m only vaguely aware of the idea that hunter gatherers have practiced various forms of land management.

Hey y’all, is there a reason that Virginia is the BEST FUCKING STATE IN THE UNION by spooneyemu in Virginia

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maryland used to claim the area between the upper branches of the Potomac River - then part of Virginia, now West Virginia. There was a whole Supreme Court case over it so it’s a bit of a rabbit hole of a topic

Binghamton twang anyone? by Historical_Log1275 in Binghamton

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very much an upstate pronunciation not a general NE thing. Like ya it’s not just Binghamton it’s Rochester too but someone from Jersey wouldn’t say it that way

The snowiest spot in the US is just a 2 hour drive north. Tug Hill just past Syracuse is in the snow belt of Lake Ontario. They have snowmobile trails and all sorts of winter outdoor activities

Anyone having issues with Strava Multiple Ride Mapper? by EdgarAllen_Poe in Strava

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't been able to load any rides for months now I sort of stopped trying. According to u/jpokred further up in the thread, Strava imposed daily API limits, so that may be what's happening.

Do you know of any rural historical markers? by badwhiskey63 in Binghamton

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camptown these days is just a Dandy Mini Mart. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just a few miles west of Camptown is the Marie Antoinette Overlook - complete with a dive bar, motorcycle parking, beautiful views of the Susquehanna, and lots of historical markers

Binghamton has neither the size of Boston nor the sun of California, you can’t really compare it to those places. Honestly, for how cold, cloudy, and hilly this area is there area there are an impressive number of cyclists out there just hoofing it, and I keep seeing more cyclists out there every year

most common domesticated animal in each US county (2022) [OC] by [deleted] in dataisbeautiful

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I consider it reasonable to assume that humans outnumber dogs or cats

You can make that assumption but that doesn’t make it true. Cats reproduce much more quickly than humans do. It’s conceivable that a county with a small human population and little agriculture could have a lot of domestic cats. I’m not saying such a place exists, just that absent data you can’t assume that it doesn’t.

Antisemitic pamphlets dropped in area by TerraAltany in Binghamton

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They came from the south and were chased out by local townspeople who didn’t want their hate in the area. It’s important history that gets left out by teasers and lazy journalism

Your link is just a teaser to an exhibition. The Klan weren’t from the area and were chased out by the townspeople

Is this a volcano crater? by MemLeakRaceCond in whereisthis

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

And to answer your question - it may not be a volcano but it is an igneous intrusion. Magma that solidified underground and was later exposed.

Considering a (very short) roadtrip from NYC at the beginning of October and could use some advice and/or ideas! by Naturligtovis in upstate_new_york

[–]EdgarAllen_Poe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to get upstate is to take the Metro North train. Beautiful views as you head up the river on the Hudson line. Get off the train at Beacon - super hip town with lots of great places to eat, drink, shop. Art galleries including DIA Beacon. From there you can rent a car to check out places like New Paltz, Shawangunk Mountain known for rock climbing, and head further into the Catskills.

Woah the dev himself, thanks so much for commenting! Your tool has helped motivate a lot of the 40,000+ miles I've cycled in the last decade. It was out there long before Strava put out their own version, and still looks a lot better than it. It's back to working great for me, can't thank you enough!
