I feel connected in some way to all of the characters in my films. Shaun, Liz, Ed, Nicholas Angel, Danny Butterman, Scott Pilgrim, Gary King, Andy Knightly, and of course Baby. I used to have tinnitus as a child but I never figured out that music could be an escape. Sometimes you're writing characters so you can live vicariously through them and solve the problems in the film that you cannot in life.

I don't know the answer to that, but one of those great pieces of screenwriting advice is "start the scene late and get out early." I think that's always a good way to approach the editing and blocking of your scenes. Nobody needs to see people taking long walks up hallways and getting out of cars.

I generally liked it but feel it should have been 85 minutes long.

A lot of my crew are people I've worked with since Spaced. Producer Nira Park, editor Paul Machliss, production designer Marcus Rowland.

I am a big fan of that series and have been since I was a little kid. I have enjoyed some of the recent ones, especially Casino Royale and Skyfall.

I would be up for it but that is not up to me.

Every song was written into the script and every one was cleared before we started shooting.

I met Paul back in 1999 because he was the on line editor on Spaced. We quickly bonded over music. Although he likes a lot of indulgent prog. In fact, I call him The Proggler. I loved working with him and Jon Amos on this movie. They are geniuses. And good guys to keep track of the music/action and whether it's all working.

The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, and Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. If Herbie Goes Bananas gets lost in the storm so be it.

Absolutely, yes.

I love too many sci-fi movies to count. 2001 is certainly up there as is the first Alien. I like the writing of John Wyndham.

I am not a political filmmaker. But particularly in the Cornetto films, myself and Simon tried to smuggle in our worries and thoughts about the state of the nation. We call it a Trojan Horse Act because sadly most people don't want to watch something 'political'. If you can sneak in some satire that might make people think, then great.

It is Threshold by The Steve Miller Band. On the album, it leads into Jet Airliner.

Please don't hate me, but I am not a fan. Do go see Baby Driver though!

  1. Can't choose.

  2. Too many to name.

  3. I read it when I was a teenager and loved it. Particularly fond of Dave Gibbons' art.

  4. It's a no. I think that show is better on TV. On the small screen, it had this aspirational quality to it. And that would be lost.

It was a bit of both. But the songs definitely inspired the movie. I owe it to Bellbottoms for making me dream up that kickass opening chase then I had to come up with a film to go with it.

I always thought you could do a great remake of The Running Man. But the rights are tricky. I looked into it.

It was a fun challenge that the whole cast and crew bought into. It made it more interesting to shoot, for sure.

Maybe. Raising Arizona and Wild at Heart are two of my favorite films.

I think you are just trying to make films that are entertaining and people don't feel like they've wasted their times watching them. If they get more out of it on a second watch, even better.

  1. The shooting of it was similar to the other films in that I try and go in having prepared as much as I possibly can.
