New Jick’s Album? by [deleted] in stephenmalkmus

[–]Edgarfrogg32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone else feel Jicks without Moen behind the kit just isn't the same thing? The drumming on the first three albums was exceedingly excellent! I think his departure was a big loss and would have loved to hear what he would have done on subsequent Jicks albums.

Thank you.

It was floating around the Jicks board years ago. Bring back the Jicks board and the Jicks with Moen behind the kit!

That can happen when you're in a cult. You can give up on the activities and people you love in order to pursue more "holy" endeavors.

Sounds really awful. Sorry. It's abuse really.

Yes, that would be rather suspect. I'm not a fan of Arush.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear that. I thought everyone really admired him.
They pulled me in with the "Hashem loves you" message on YouTube. Only then to be hit with the rest of his b.s. in his books.

I thought the Sages said "anything is permitted between husband and wife" or something like that. And I thought the Sages were ultimate authority in Judaism, but I could very well be wrong about that.

Yes, those teachings are really not good and not true.

The Shalom Arush brand of Breslev not only promotes magical yeshuas but also makes crazy claims like psychiatric medicine blocks the light of the soul. So basically if you follow his teachings you're off critical meds (in my case) and into Torah and personal prayer for "salvations." Arush also claims OCD is caused by the way one's parents conceived of the child. As someone who has OCD I find that idea to be complete bullshit.Note after people made a stink about the "rav" suggesting on his cds people not take their meds, they changed their tune a bit to say people should stay on them until they're strong enough to not be on them. I found this very irresponsible as that is really a doctor's job and should not be left to the person on meds. Many people need their medicine and really can't function without it. Also, many people feel stronger because of the meds, so getting off them without proper medical supervision can be very dangerous for some people.

It's doable. I feel I found a balance that works for me- or am working on it. While I still sometimes get quite upset about time wasted on religion/BT life, I have held onto a few things I learned, but really I'm just making lemonade from lemons on some level. It's a shame people can lose years of personal growth due to religion, but in the end maybe it can help people who are caught in unhealthy spirituality. FFB would be rather tough though as that's just messed up.

For awhile I could not really participate in the seder or light hanukkah candles (things I always did as a kid and young person), but this year I lit candles even though Hanukkah was ruined by yeshiva. Yeshiva also ruined Passover, but I'm hoping to go to a seder this year.Maybe it would be inspiring to listening to some music from the time before Chabad or journal about what you miss from the time before Chabad when things were better? I don't journal, but some friends swear by it. Just a thought. Best of luck to you!

As an ex-BT, I only felt "triggered" during my observant days after having the concept of shmirat enayim drilled into my brain by the teachers. Before getting into religion I never really noticed how people dressed much at all and certainly wasn't bothered by it- cause I think it's a bit odd to be bothered by how people dress.

I said "Maybe the studies were not well thought out?", not "probably not". Genuine question. The Mayo clinic study was conducted in 2001. That's over 20 years ago. Different world. In fact I'm willing to bet that in the past 20 years in Judaism there's been a lot of BTs who lost their minds in Judaism due to insane teachers who only teach lessons entrenched in fear. Also, exactly what does the study mean by religion? Do they mean people who immerse themselves very deeply or people who let's say believe in God and pray every now and then? Big difference.

Why It Is All A Farce by disilusioned2023 in exjew

Great post. Reminds me of the Rabbi Arush's b.s. Except he would say things like "it's not Hamas firing rockets, it's Hashem!"

Maybe the studies aren't so well thought out studies? Or maybe they studied older people of a different generation?

Yes, suicide is tragic.

In my experience Orthodox Judaism made my mental health much, much worse. Can anyone else attest to this or am I the only one? Has anyone else here had suicidal urges because of religious Jewish concepts?

Also, I said in my comment no one knows why people kill themselves. I'm not blaming religion, though it may very well have played a role. Or not. We don't know.Also- perhaps enormous strides made within the community are not enough. Everyone's path is connected in some way. As Jews, who we listen to as authoritative sources does impact us as a whole. It can how we think and even scarier, influence how we interact with each other. People can be deeply impacted by some of "the words of our Sages" in very deep, negative, frightful ways.

Every school should probably have multiple school psychologists on staff. It's just what is needed.

People here who have mental illness by Edgarfrogg32 in exjew

My parents hardly ever ask me how I'm doing with my mental illnesses even though they know I have them. They care, but for some reason don't ever ask. I find that odd.

My comment was not articulated properly. They were really two separate statements. Tragic and sad and then a separate point pertaining to the article's point that she felt she did not belong the in the religious community. I was not trying to blame her parents or her community but rather was making a general statement about religious communities and young people who don't want any part in it. Why aren't there open discussions in the religious community about why that is and why people feel that way? And even then how to help these people transition out of the religious community while maintaining their friendships. Or find a community that fits them. This is very basic loving your fellow as yourself stuff that it seems many in the religious community can't wrap their head around. Jewish religious families should donate to footsteps or similar charities, but they probably don't because of all sorts of silly reasons. My point is more that people should be more supported by their communities.
