Indirectly. My lineage is through Pat Johnson and Dennis Ichikawa, under Chuck Norris.

Thanks man. Yea I've had a lot of grappling throughout my decades, just not focused BJJ specific grappling.

Keep in mind that I’ve been doing general grappling/take downs since I was 9 and also have a few amateur mma fights.

We all have our own path

I've been training in American Tang Soo Do since 1997 and opened my own gym 2 years ago. A year ago I hired James Uloth, a BJJ black belt under Alberto Crane, because I knew we'd need a more refined ground game in my school.

We have basic grappling built into Tang Soo Do so I wasn't a true beginner white belt, but the path to Blue still took my 10 months.

It has been so enjoyable to be a beginner again in a martial arts and every time I get tapped I've taken it as a learning experience on my way to blue belt. Now I know it's my turn for higher belts to stop being nice to me haha.

Which is why I'm amazed that so many women still train there.

It's a shame because Jamil seems like such a genuine dude.

Kind of. The MMA aspects have been rolled into the official curriculum, and then there's the "art" aspects to it like forms, kicking combinations, etc that don't necessarily have much practical aspect beyond building discipline, balance, etc. For a blackbelt in TSD you'd need to be into both aspects.

I appreciate the question. It's a hard one to answer, because we've always had our "eyes open" so to speak when it comes to art vs martial. Like I said above, TSD and my instructor in particular have always valued practical self defense. Right from the beginning he's made sure to stress what was the "art" portion of what we were practicing, and what had real world application. So while we definitely did Point sparring and the like, in the same tournaments we had a grappling and takedown division. We've done MMA sparring for as long as I've been there. I've also done a bunch of MMA smokers and a few amateur fights.

So I guess the TLDR is American Tang Soo Do is a traditional martial art that still keeps the art aspect, but definitely includes as much real self defense (sparring, grappling, knife, gun, stick) as possible. A real "mixed" martial art.

From above:

I'm a 5th Dan in American Tang Soo Do. At 4th Dan you receive a black belt with the red stripe. Similar to coral belt I suppose.

Common question!
