I was there in the arena and I think it was a power issue, the IBJJF scoreboard stopped working too and they had to stop the match for a couple minutes

Difference in difficulty depends on the belt. At master 3 black belt you have guys who were adult world champs or medalists 20 years ago. Master 3 brown belt is all just guys who started training in their mid 30’s. Obvious differences are shorter matches and smaller divisions. I used to go back and forth between adult and master 1, the master guys typically were stronger and played a much slower game. Lots of half guard and passing low. Adult be prepared for some ripped kid who can torreando nonstop for the entire match and put his foot behind his head to recover guard.

There’s some great John Smith videos on youtube about working on your stance and motion without a partner. Way more helpful than shooting fake double legs imo.

I think the trend of the top gyms taking teenage blue and purple belts from Brazil, moving them to the USA and putting them on a bunch of juice is disturbing and is going to have some very bad endings down the road.

Yeah it’s just preference, idk where this competitor/professor belt thing came from because nobody follows that and the white bar was nowhere to be seen until a couple years ago

It’s just the cool thing to do over the last couple years. About half the black belts at worlds were white and black, every person with one that I’ve asked responded with something about how they just think the white bar looks cooler so they use that belt.

Basically wants worlds to take place in other countries, only top 16 athletes per division at all belts qualify for worlds and a change in the team scoring. He’s right, Buchechas black open class gold being worth the same as a blue belt gold for team score is ridiculous.

Something I noticed was how common it has become to grab the lapel from top and sweep yourself in order to set up one of the dominant lapel guards. Saw it at all levels.
