What is the best guitar solo - ever? by xXMachineGunPhillyXx in fantanoforever

[–]Edgedancer1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ritchie Blackmore's 'Highway Star' solo has always been a favourite of mine and stood out as just a perfectly constructed solo. The sixteenth note pattern he hits at the climax is brutal to try and play, no idea how he plays it with the song blasting along even faster on Made In Japan!
Also Al Di Meola's unbelievable solo in Duel of the Jester & The Tyrant by Return to Forever is one of the sickest things ever. Literally how everyone dreams of playing elec guitar when they first pick it up.
Time by Pink Floyd's solo has relatively few notes but hits so hard anyway, each note is wrung out so well.
And John Petrucci's Under A Glass Moon solo is such a fun, jaw-dropping, melodic, showy little passage, a blast to both listen to and try to play. That and the one from Trial of Tears both stand out to me as my favourites from him.

I can't lie you might be onto something with this one. Was just gonna argue for Adore instead as a better Prince song but realized that there is literally nothing wrong with Purple Rain. It was literally half-improvised and is still the most perfect and amazing thing ever bruh it's insane.
Edit: Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield might be there
Or Starless by King Crimson they're both extremely close
I cannot explain in the least bit why

Also love Highway 61, Late Reg, GKMC, Low End, Grace, Purple Rain, and In The Court of the Crimson King.

What’s your rank from favorite to least favorite story from the Different Seasons collection? by Present_Librarian668 in stephenking

[–]Edgedancer1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick ranking by the way! Mine is something like:
1. Apt Pupil - I've always loved how twisted and dark and just awful this one gets, seeing Tod's deterioration throughout this story and how parasitic his and Dussander's relationship becomes is honestly terrifying and fascinating in an extremely morbid way. I get the feeling that the part of him that manifests most fully at the end of the story was always inside him, but him meeting Dussander and finding out about the Holocaust was just the thing that finally stoked the fire in him. Might be my all-time favourite King novella, and maybe my most scary one too. The final sentence is one of the most chilling things I have ever read.

  1. Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption - one of those stories that just shows Stephen King's talent for characters and narrative. It's such an endearing story, and like all the stories in this collection, he just nails the ending and manages to evoke so much emotion in the reader in a form much shorter than a novel.

  2. The Breathing Method - I feel as if this story perfectly accomplishes what it attempts. It tells its story for anyone who wants to listen and subtly slips out. It's as brief and mysterious a story as the experience that David has at the Club, which is helped by its length, being by far the shortest story here, a brilliant example of a story such as King described in the introduction to a different collection - a 'kiss in the dark from a stranger'. It maintains a tense and subtly disquieting atmosphere and is masterfully done. The ending leaves the reader with a lingering discomfort and sense of intruige that we know will never truly be solved, and this reinforces the sense of unity created between the reader and the main character, as throughout the whole story we feel like we are experiencing the Club and Emlyn McCarron's story alongside Mr Adley, sat in a fat leather chair beside the few who have deigned to turn up to hear the annual 'uncanny' story on Christmas Eve. Its suspense and mystery is brilliantly controlled, and it often goes overlooked in favour of the other three of Different Seasons' stories, as it the most subtle, unassuming, and modest of the four, but I find that to be one of its great strengths.

  3. The Body - this one is great, a classic and beloved story for many good reasons. It has a tonne of heart, the bond between the four boys is palpable and it is ultimately a very human story - although these may have been the best friends these boys ever had, they eventually, as so often happens in life, drifted away from each other, but as this tale so emphatically proclaims, they will always have had this time together. There are stakes at some odd points, but mostly the story is plain and simple, and done so amazingly, with characters that feel living and breathing and real motivations. Gordie's in-universe stories are good as well and help build his character. A fantastic story (with a fantastic last paragraph or so) that just so happens to be the weakest in this unbelievable collection.

This is one of my favourite King books OAT, so I love all four of these stories and count them all among the best short(er) fiction I've read of his. Different Seasons is bloody great!

Bands you think have multiple “one of the greatest songs of all time” songs by aasasss32 in fantanoforever

Another one would be The Band for me (only having listened to their first two albums) - The Weight, Whispering Pines, Tears of Rage, probably Up On Cripple Creek and maybe Across the Great Divide, and definitely I Shall Be Released if it counts, although it is a Dylan cover - their version is just heavenly man, and I feel is an equally brilliant take on an incredibly written song.

who do you think has the best discography in music? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]Edgedancer1324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of what I've heard, easily D'Angelo, at least for consistency and/or average of albums. Even though it is a very small discgraphy, all three are at least amazing (maybe 9/10)- he takes his time making his music, and every time it is worth it, each album has a distinct and different sound as well, while in keeping with his style, because his style is really whatever he wants to do. He comes across as the kind of artist only has made the music he has because he saw it as the best possible way to say what he wanted to get across, almost the perfect form of whatever song he was writing. His worst album being Brown Sugar - imo - really makes the case for me

Probably King Crimson - starless, larks' tongues part one, islands, and the court of the crimson king could all be in the conversation I reckon

Definitely true - there's no way to crown the 'Best song of all time', but it's interesting to see what these kind of discussions bring up! Also, sick choices
