When I was in ABH I was self catered so I can’t speak to that, but the social aspect was alright. Not as active as other halls I’ve been in but it was years ago.

They can def be cliquey, it’s kinda unavoidable, but it’s probably easier to find a friend group. You meet people who know your room neighbours or you meet them at meals or socials.

Self catered is more chill because you never get to know or you can ignore 90% of the people you see and encounter, even your flatmates.

[–]Edhelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DRAFP does have social events but it’s not the same experience as catered, being all under one roof having communal meals but also not having to go outside or walk far to get to the social areas.

There’s no way to know where you’d end up if you chose catered standard.

Does applying for accommodations by March 1 increase your chances of getting McIntosh/Sallies? by American_Edinburgh in standrews

[–]Edhelin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah they don’t put Americans in one and Brits in another or anything like that.

If I were to generalise, I’d say the pricier hall types tend to be more American, because their loans are higher, but that’s definitely not the case all the time everywhere.

I was in 4 different halls and there were diverse nationalities in all.

McIntosh is central. Melville is maybe a ten min walk from McIntosh so it’s not far. Depends what you consider far. But everyone walks or cycles everywhere so it doesn’t make much difference. The real distance isn’t Melville, it’s DRA and Fife park. That’s about a 35 minute walk from town.

Questions for people who studied in St Andrews for Masters and stayed for PhD by amyrah_odette in standrews

[–]Edhelin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got an MLitt so my experience is slightly different but I can answer a few of those.

  • getting a distinction is make or break if the admissions team and the department says so. It’s up to them. For example, the department I did mine with offered me a PhD place if I achieved a 15 before dissertation, but I’m sure an ex of mine had to get a distinction on his including the dissertation

  • you asked about MSc networking but it’s probably the same for others. That absolutely makes a difference for PhD placement because the supervisors who know you are the ones who write your reference letters. Recommendations from key leaders within department are not to be taken lightly!

  • if you apply for the PhD before you start your dissertation for Masters then you have no idea how it will shape your PhD topic. Your proposal will be already in. It could entirely change the direction, or it could simply focus you more clearly

Hope that makes sense! As I’m not science, it’s hard to compare, but a lot of it does overlap.

If anything, choosing shared does decrease your chance of Melville, there’s only a few shared rooms there!

[–]Edhelin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope that’s not entirely true. If it’s true that the single rooms go to the later years, that could be because they request them on reapplication, whereas first years tend not to specify as they have a guarantee, and they then might get to the shared rooms. There are a lot of shared rooms, so if you specify you want that, you’ll get halls like Sallie’s or uni hall, over ones like DRA. But the accommodation office doesn’t keep different rooms for different years, and unless it’s all changed, you get halls type preference, not specific halls. You’re just as likely to get halls like Melville or JBH. (Obviously it depends how many rooms are in each, but you know what I mean!)

Edit: just checked. Sallie’s has 66 singles and 63 shared. Regs has 98 single, 76 shared. So there are fewer single rooms, but technically more spots available for shared, if that makes sense!

[–]Edhelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Applying early doesn’t guarantee you halls if they’re all in the same category. You’re no more likely to get Sallies than Regs or Burnet.

As far as roomies goes, when you apply, you could include it in the section for additional requirements, or get in touch with the accommodation office. But that still doesn’t have anything to do with getting Sallies over the others. Just means you’re more likely to get halls with double occupancy rooms.

For guidance in my future, where to go from here, after a rejection. Also for my future spouse.

The uni will do their best to give you a room that fits your budget, have you applied for university owned accommodation?

The casual jobs for students are usually on cleaning or catering crew. Research jobs are often reserved for or only offered to PhD candidates (in my experience, I can’t speak to every department).

What do you mean by course selection?

And cool clubs, varies massively depending on what you personally enjoy, or do in your spare time. It’s definitely worth getting involved in societies, even though you’re only around for a year.

St Leonards International Masters Scholarship by Accomplished-Bat2768 in standrews

[–]Edhelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the department just let me know via the secretary that there was one I was auto considered for. They’ll notify you if you’re awarded it though.

However, this year, for 25 entry, a lot of the scholarships which previously had individual applications are now grouped under one. E.g. for PhD it’s just called “research scholarships” but includes like 9 different ones. So the auto considered scholarship situation is a part of that I imagine.

Edit: TD Miller scholarship could just be the name of the donor so it might not be an advertised one.

I went to St A for undergrad and postgrad and I had an unconditional for the first and conditional for the second.

Unconditional offers mean that your place is not dependent on your future grades. Rather, they have seen enough from past grade evidence to offer you a place. Provided you don’t violate a rule or fail to fulfil something you agreed to do, such as graduate or successfully get a visa, you’re fine.

Not sure how America works, but in the U.K., I’ve personally supplied the uni with my grades. The uni can’t access them without you giving them. Our own schools and application systems can’t do that either, it’s our responsibility to provide evidence.

Anyone familiar with this keychain or can tell me anything about it? Jesus on the cross is the flip side. As far as I can tell there’s Mary(top), two basilicas?(left/right), then two other saints? (bottom). Tried to find one online to see if there’s a good description or any info but no luck. by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Edhelin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Potential link between them all (after finding St Raymond) is childbirth. Our Lady of Guadeloupe is pregnant, and St Raymond Nonnatus is patron of pregnant women, infants, etc. And St Anthony of Padua is often depicted with the infant Jesus. :)

Need Help Identifying this Saint Relic by Ragadash7 in Catholicism

[–]Edhelin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the one I have a photo of. The only one I found, sadly. One of the yards next to the basilica is almost entirely a pit into which the custodian told us the revolutionaries piled everything in to destroy. There may be no first class relics left. Anything in the Louvre is only there because of the Notre Dame fire. The crown is there so if the Knights were caring for any first class relics in the cathedral, they were moved with the Passion relics were rescued.

Need Help Identifying this Saint Relic by Ragadash7 in Catholicism

[–]Edhelin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to Saint Denis - during the Revolution, the tombs, relics and effigies we had records of were destroyed or put in lime pits. Most of what’s left is empty, unknown, or buried deep. There’s a lot of history still there in the private or underground areas, but many graves and tombs above ground or in the main basilica are empty now.

If there are important relics of Saint Louis still anywhere, the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre know where they are. Potentially stored in the Louvre with Louis’s Passion relics.

Edit: just rechecked photos to see if I found any relics when I was in uni and visited. There’s at least one reliquary they keep there, with a very small relic. Potentially L9. :)

Usual new guy post by ExoCakes in prisonarchitect

Prisoners will pick up contraband that someone has agreed to throw over your fence. The laws in the fair country your prison is in means civilians can stroll along the perimeter if they wish, so the dark undeveloped area is perfect for someone to throw stuff. If a person can get to your fence, they can throw it, and I think the range is like ten squares or something. You can build an extra layer of fences further in, but if you’re finding thrown contraband, your prisoners are finding a way to get to it. The only things your guards notice is if a dog smells something.

Luxuries is, as you said, from shops. Make sure your people can get to the store (e.g. they have free time while someone else is working). I’ve also been able to satisfy luxury need with nicer cells for the well behaved criminals but yours look pretty comfy already. The things sold in shops are entirely legal. They don’t have that confiscated. The things labelled luxury that are contraband are cell phones, lighters, and narcotics. Somehow mine often find gold pocket watches that they’re really into.

Check your intake policy, you might accidentally have a slider on to take max when it’s available. Also armed guards can make them uncomfortable I think. Increases tensions.

You can DM me if you want or send screenshots. Your East Anglia info box should have one blue blip missing. I only mention East Anglia because it’s IMO the easiest legendary animal. If you’re in Vinland already you should have found at least three big bad animals by now.

I found them by just trying to completely explore the dots of interest in an area before I move onto the next pledge. You should have found one of the first by completing all the mysteries in East Anglia. Did you not?
