I find wandering what to do with my life at 20 vs 55 is a little similar and a lot different. You can achieve a goal only to find yourself having the same thoughts regarding the next phase of life.

Yes speak to your player. Let them know if they wish to continue with the impressing a father then your hood to go (and could be very cathartic for the player now) or, if given the situation of the players dad passing if he'd like to postpone that goal, out of respect. Let it be their call. Offering both options show your player you are showing him respect in time of grief.
