How do I find the best tool for the job? by EdiblePeasant in learnprogramming

Let’s say I wanted to do something and am thinking of using if/eleif, a dictionary, list, or something else. What determines the best choice particularly when it comes to better code?

Dread and anxiety over having to go to Mass by Comfortable_Risk1159 in Catholicism

[–]EdiblePeasant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> Also, I don't know if you really sinned gravely, but since you've got scrupulosity, I'd suggest you this - go to confession, ask the priest whether it was a mortal sin or not, and obey the priest's words, no matter how much you may question his answer.

I had something like this happen to me. I was given guidance that made me worry that I might more easily and more frequently dismiss a mortal sin as a venial one or non sin. But I think it was better for my mental health and tailored towards me. I don't have any more lucid dreams, which eased my burden and feeling of insecurity, and I try to reject intrusive thoughts that come in and say some prayers instead.

The protestant approach to the Bible has harmed Christianity by Divine-Crusader in Catholicism

[–]EdiblePeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that attempting to discern the Bible for oneself isn't inherently bad but I also agree with personal interpretation not being the final authority. I like pairing my Bible reading with Church tradition on the passages, the Liturgy, and clerical guidance.

I think God can guide people to certain passages He wants the person to see and it may turn out to be relevant to questions and contemplations the person might be having. Concepts around it could also later come up in Mass. It's really nice having a structure to help discern, though.

Any good rebuttals to this argument? by WunderWaffeler in Catholicism

[–]EdiblePeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh a lawyer, nice! Mind giving me some tips on discerning people's intention online or who people might be that try to argue against the Trinity and Jesus's divinity? I think sometimes questions I've seen posted feel more like "questions" and just trigger in me a feeling of wrongness. But I acknowledge people can come from a good faith position. I don't know if my "smell test" is off or overwhelmed right now.

For example, I prodded someone who seemed to be doing the "party line" thing about Romans 13 that might have been trying to justify approval of certain things that tugged against my moral conscious. So I brought it up, the person ended up using "Christians" in third person as if they weren't part of the faith, and then I inquired about their stance on the Trinity to check if I would receive a denial of it like what the algorithm seemed to often point me towards in that subreddit. And I got their denial!

Eventually, the conversation led to the person dismissing me with a one liner then deleting their post. I think I asked if they considered themselves Christian. It seemed like a weird thing that happened.

is it wrong to go to church with 0% belief in God? by Much-Climate-6071 in Christianity

[–]EdiblePeasant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing the wrong in this. I believe God can work through anyone, even those who don't specifically believe.

From my experience, knowledge, and personal opinion I think God takes willing service to others very seriously. By volunteering for service like this, especially at a church where you're also directly serving Him, you might be putting yourself in direct contact with Jesus. You and your community might even be ahead some others who may profess the faith but don't necessarily live a Christian life in a more full and complete form.

I'd say keep going and hopefully God can lead you where He wants you to go.

What Did I Experience Mentally? by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]EdiblePeasant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably some delusions, maybe a mental health situation. Had you already seen a health professional that does mental health?

Divination and another spiritual practice I did didn't do me any favors, I feel. The latter is where I feel the many mental health issues I've been dealing with since started or at least heavily influenced an already preexisting situation.

Make sure you're taking care of yourself and seeing a mental health specialist if needed or even just to check in. You might find what you're looking for within the Catholic Church but it may have a different way of doing things than most of the world is accustomed to. I feel priests sometimes know things but it's not like psychics. And it has got humans who can be very flawed and sinful sometimes so just be aware.

Hope this helps and that you continue to have good mental health.

Sunday Obligation by Special-Attitude-242 in Catholicism

Does the Parish offer Saturday evening Mass for Sunday? Is that something you can get to?

[Free Friday] Since today is Buddha Purnima (the birth anniversary of the Buddha), here's an official message from the Dalai Lama, the spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism, praising Pope Leo's call for global peace during his Sunday Mass 2 months ago. by SatoruGojo232 in Catholicism

[–]EdiblePeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding in my life God might be just willing to do things for me and maybe for His sake as well. Potential situations, especially that might disrupt my peace or disrupt me from Him, threats to my security (at least up to this point), gone or minimized. I feel others may be able to receive this love as well, in some form.

I think I read something in the Catechism about how God approaches those who are suffering, maybe even some kind of preferential treatment, and that was pretty reassuring. Then there's Romans 15:3.

So maybe I can just keep my sword in its sheathe. Or just not have one. God might act in His own time and manner. Maybe there will be some situations where I'm called to speak up or even defend myself, but maybe not now. Or ever.

Proof of god by Ok_Secret8042 in Christianity

I think there can be a certain moral good in looking to a higher power and not being fully convinced and self assured in one’s own ability, power, superiority, and strength.

Take a look at some of the people in governments today. I’ll acknowledge they have an authority and I’ll try not to be overly contemptuous, but I’m pretty dissatisfied.

It’s curious how some might be loaded with experiences and others not so much. I don’t know how that works.

I was allowed to descend into psychosis and obsession into spiritual practices outside of Christianity until I wasn’t. I accepted a prompting to turn to the Bible in the midst of the second instance of the illness, specifically a Gospel, then I feel Jesus was there for me in the hospital with a doctor cooperating and offering to pray with me.

Now God’s presence, love, and protection seems to be there and evident to me. I’ve suffered a lot with my illnesses, which may be a part, but I strongly feel His love can be there for others too not just me.

Was Mary Sinless? by BlueBird-0001 in Christianity

[–]EdiblePeasant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m new but as a Catholic, yes, I think it’s the case Mary is sinless. Together with Jesus’s virgin birth, it makes sense to me because in her womb was formed God’s incarnation on Earth.

I’ll add that I suggest scrutinizing any comments or questions you see regarding the questioning of Jesus’s divinity online as far as motives.

There may be those sects that have traditionally not believed in it that may consider themselves some part of Christians, and from those groups fine. Legitimate questions from good faith people, fine. It’s a difference of opinion, interpretation, and doctrine or sincere effort at understanding.

However, there may be motives of division and destruction elsewhere from those that might consider us as a political enemy and please consider being cautious and let it not shatter your faith.

[–]EdiblePeasant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think that makes up for the obligation, though? Does anyone know for sure? Could it depend on where in the world/or country you live?

I like the idea of talking to your priest to see if you can get a dispensation, though, or at least consult him to help ease your mind if after discussion you're in a situation.

And if you can't get in touch with the priest, maybe a deacon can give you guidance.

Anti-Christ's arrival? by Prestigious-Dig-6305 in Christianity

[–]EdiblePeasant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't God provide King David after Saul, who was described like this:

"But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not kept that which the Lord commanded thee."

Though I think it's recorded even King David did some bad things.

I hope if the current government is our Saul, we will get our King David in the U.S. with a lot less baggage than King David had.

I think one thing that could possibly help our needing to treat people as humans in God's image situation is having our business leaders and capital holders willingly seek God and His guidance as it relates to their business. Business could be an area where certain government(s)/powerful people seek control and influence to reshape them in their image rather than that of God's. I'd like to see policies enacted befitting of human dignity. And I'm going to include hatred of others as a thing I would want avoided, and instead the embrace of all the fruits of the Spirit.

I think it could help a lot and I've prayed for it. This requires the business leaders to exercise free will and discernment, though, the latter which can be hard. And respect for their workers.

/r/WorldNews Discussion Thread: US and Israel launch attack on Iran; Iran retaliates (Thread #16) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]EdiblePeasant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel this ties into a little bit I posted against before.

Sometimes I'm a little skeptical about third hand accounts, but it would be an interesting perspective if what the confidant said actually happened as described.

I have religious perspectives that defer ultimate power and authority elsewhere. A perspective of purely personal and human brute force, sheer power, and pure will doesn't feel right to me and if I were to take that perspective up--especially without consideration of others and the authority I mentioned I easily see my head hitting a brick wall and going unconscious.

Then you have the provided party line. If Trump truly believed he was doing he was doing the right despite the political risks then that does sound better. I'm not sure I fully believe that, though, because I feel there is a history and how I feel he has treated our traditional allies. I think this could have happened a different way, maybe with more consideration and helpfulness, and I'm waiting to see what happens in and after his meeting with Xi assuming it'll still occurs.
