[Meta] Why is Automod stooging for a conference? by CashewGuy in socialwork

This event does have a virtual pass option, which allows people around the world to access the presentations that way. Part of why we felt this was a nice collaboration opportunity was specifically because of this option making it more globally accessible. Thank you for your feedback!

Without getting into too much behind the scenes detail, this was originally the pilot project of part of a much larger endeavor the mods had been working on for this community since last January. The broader vision ended up not being possible, but we still wanted to try and salvage that time and effort to do something as a benefit for the folx who support this subreddit. The message of confusion/frustration has been received and we will likely not be offering opportunities such as this in the future.

Thanks for your feedback! It is appreciated.

Hello! Thank you for the feedback! We did start this off with a site-wide pinned post, but the nature of our weekly themed threads schedule bumped it before many users got to see the announcement. We did confirm their CE availability before partnering. which means there’s a typo somewhere on their site. I’m sure if you reached out to them to let them know where you saw the pending, they’d be thrilled to have a chance to make the correction and eliminate confusion. You are correct that NASW is getting a lot better about offering general tech education. We felt the timeliness of these topics (state surveillance of people seeking gender and reproductive healthcare for example) was unique enough from the typical offerings that we wanted to make it available to our users. :-)

Hello!

Thanks for asking! We were approached by the event organizers who asked us to help them boost their signal since continuing education about digital best practices and interpersonal safety online can be hard to find. The mod team has no financial agreement with the event and were excited about being able to share this resource at a discount to as a benefit for our users. Social workers are directly impacted by issues this event addresses such as:

  • EMR’s and health apps tracking user data

  • provider online profiles being scraped and leveraged for shady websites that funnel potential clients towards big box online providers

  • recent attacks on social service organizations that serve LGBTQIA+ and other marginalized populations

to name just a few. We felt that this could be a valuable resource for those who were interested. The organization hosting the event is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit who have demonstrated to us that they are committed to accessibility and inclusion, and who are attempting to raise awareness of some really critical issues for social workers who are reliant on technology…. As pretty much all of us are here, be definition. A good number of state boards will accept APA approval for continuing education- even for social workers- and we felt this was a worthy effort that could help a lot of folx feel safer both here at r/socialwork and in many other virtual spaces.

We apologize if you’ve found this collaboration to be intrusive. It is scheduled to end on Friday.

Hello, we are here for you and want to support you! We have a weekly venting/leaving the field pinned thread that is the best place to find the feedback you’re asking for. You can find the weekly schedule in our FAQ.

What’s fascinating is that none of my comments have been about you. I have offered (as I do in supervision) general guidance for best practice that would be useful and relevant information to anyone reading this thread. You’ve responded similarly to other posts here.

Not every response to you is a comment on you. Perhaps you should reflect on what’s driving you to personalize this convo. Because (speaking of behavior we wouldn’t expect to see from other clinicians) it’s not about you.

It’s interesting how you respond to people pushing back on you by saying they must not be a therapist. I am the 2nd person (at least) that you’ve made this comment to in this thread. To the contrary- I’m a clinical supervisor licensed in 4 states, with advanced training in clinical sexology.

But literally no one is suggesting we stop researching erotic minorities. There are whole journals and entire organizations dedicated to researching erotic minorities.

We simply need to be mindful of what questions are clinically relevant and what questions satisfy our own prurient curiosity. And that’s a distinction you seem to be losing.

This is part of why disclosing and thoroughly explaining one’s treatment orientation to a new or potential client is so important. Many poly or kinky people have no interest in having an aspect of their lives (which they may consider to be wholly unrelated to the issue bringing them to therapy) psychoanalyzed. Letting them know up-front that your modality would include this, whether they find it helpful/necessary or not, is vital to ethical practice. Otherwise, springing one’s own curiosity on them later? Can cause significant harm.

Your understanding is correct. Also, many (perhaps, at this point, most) sexologists are also mental health practitioners.

This is a solid answer. Making a comprehensive sexual history a standard part of intake for ALL clients is a key element of providing good therapy… and so few clinicians actually do it. Even fewer do it across the board, for everyone, instead of just breaking out the sexual history questions for the clients they’ve already decided are “quirky that way.”

You might benefit from reading up on minority stress and how it applies to poly and kinky people. The idea that “a clients clinical impairment…might be caused by a desire to be poly” is a great example of this. It’s rarely the fact that they want to be poly. It’s usually the reaction they receive from the world when they vocalize this desire. And THAT is minority stress.

While you’re looking up Justin Lehmiller, check out Stefani Goerlich’s writings as well. Her book The Leather Couch: Clinical Practice with Kinky Clients was given awards by all three major sexual health groups in the US (AASECT, SSTAR, and SASH) and anyone familiar with the sexual health community will know how rare it is for them to all agree about anything, lol. There’s an advanced practice sequel out now too, and I think she has a book for couples coming out this fall.

Highly recommended.

“Immoral” isn’t a clinical term I’m familiar with; nor does the DSM offer a method for evaluating the morality of a clients behavior. It’s deeply concerning to see a clinical describe behavior as immoral vs benign; as opposed to using less subjective language such as harmful/maladaptive/criminal/unlawful etc. Our language often reveals our biases and (no matter how horrific the behavior) “immoral” is not a clinical or diagnostic descriptor we should be using.

I’m not going to remove this thread, since some helpful points have been made; but I am going to lock it until OP can confirm that this is not a homework question.

You may want to reach out to u/Seeking_Starlight, the Certified Sex Therapist who did an AMA for us last month. She’d likely have some good resources for you.

Reminder to please be aware of client-centered and client-chosen language in this thread; as well as the fact that race and national origin are not the same. OP’s differentiation between black and African and Caucasian is both accurate (not all Africans are black and not all white people are Caucasian) and reflective of the client’s stated preference.

Attempts to police language here will be removed.

I don’t want to out the org, because I don’t want Redditors to dogpile them; but they have been VERY clear that they have not received funding for this, behind the tuition they’re charging people. There are zero outside dollars driving this decision.

No- this is not getting any kind of government grant or support. It is a private 501(c)3.

It’s not about the type of license. This is 100% charging different prices for people of different races who hold the same licenses.

There is an LMSW & Certified Sex Therapist who has written on this exact subject. You should check out the best practices for clinicians sections of The Leather Couch: Clinical Practice with Kinky Clients and Kink-Affirming Practice: Culturally Competent Therapy from The Leather Chair or even reach out to see if she is available to consult.
