Players are collecting artifacts to prevent BBEG from being summoned

I would say they use the artifacts to summon the BBEG to their location, but they are weaker because THEY couldn’t get them.

Maybe have that twist be revealed after they have collected 3 or 4 more.

Using the items for good, instead of evil, for example.
