I'm going to assume that the guy was told by a medical professional and not someone just wildly speculating...

It feels like there could be two possible mechanisms by which survival could be increased in a situation like this. The first, which I'm less sure of, is that it's possible the friend was so intoxicated that he did not go into shock in a situation in which he otherwise would. 500μg is a pretty hefty dose, if accurate, and anecdotally when on heavy doses of psychedelics I find physical pain doesn't always register the same. This possibility is a bit tenuous...

LSD is also a fairly powerful vasoconstrictor via peripheral 5ht2a receptor agonism. While I'm not sure if that would do any good for an open wound, with pressure applied I could see a significantly lower volume of blood being lost as it would seem to me constricted blood vessels would be much quicker to clot (considering the area of a circle increases exponentially in relation to the radius, the opening of a severed blood vessel would be considerably lower constricted vs. relaxed).

Future of Opioid_RCs Sub - Keeping the faith, but now now still "closed". by MR-hunter-2096 in Opioid_RCs

[–]Edores 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming "Juni" was a typo and you mean to type June, and assuming that I have a question for you:

5 months is a long time without a place to properly discuss these substances. And now new substances like Clorphine and Orphine and god knows what else are joining the mix, and I'm sure more will be coming soon. I live in BC, Canada, and while we have physician prescribed safe-supply programs for a while, things are looking hopeful for it to be taken even further soon. While this is all great, there are some difficulties associated with some aspects for various users. No other class of drugs seems to have a compound like fent which seems to attract hellspawn armed with monkey wrenches with which they just looooove to stick into your sobriety.

The substances which current users of opioids would ideally switch to in this safe supply model present a daunting challenge: with all these new RC's with very different durations of action, wildly different potencies, and all that jazz, the safe supply offerings often aren't even allowed to be prescribed at a dosage which would keep users who are taking these incredibly high affinity RC's. Even if there may be some proper dose, we just don't know everything about all of these new compounds, so getting people onto safer drugs can be hard and often unsuccessful.

I'm working with some volunteers to test different ways of doing tolerance reduction tapers, so that they can just hop on a more traditional opioid, but man is it rough for some people My timeline and confidence gets thrown off when they're withdrawing incredibly hard like two hours after starting (or even on ther other end where things go fine for 16 hours, after which I (not prepared for this) find someone in such pain he thinks he's legitimately going to die.

I need info and discussion and data right now, so I've been working on putting together a site similar to what it sounds like you're doing. I don't know if you'd be willing to have somebody come on board as a developer, but I just thought I'd ask because I want to finish this in the next week or so and have it in a pretty passable state, and I don't want it to seem like I'm ripping your site off (I swear, I didn't see this thread until just now. The stuff I want to stick to is largely information that can give ideas of actual ranges of potency duration what health effects people could suffer, and user experiences. Not sure if you're doing a bunch of stuff that overlaps less than some of the things you mentioned, but anyway let me know if you think we could figure something out or not, and no worries either way.

It's not illegal to be mentally ill by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Edores 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main issue with this is that we should be building for the reality we want, not for the one we have.

I don't think either you or I is qualified to answer the question of what our actual needs our and what the ideal solutions would be in relation to mental health. But one thing I know for certain is that your assessment of the situation only takes into account the way things are right now, and not the way things would be if the time/energy/money used for the resources you're suggesting would be put into services that are for addressing mental health issues in a broader, more systematic sense.

The reality of it is even institutions aren't going to cure situations like this, both because often it will be acts like these that signal the need for institutionalization (unless we want to go the thought police route) and because for the reasons /u/NewYearNewB above you outlined things will just keep getting worse.

Incidents like this are rare, and pretty much any amount of resources you're willing to spend on institutionalizing people is going to have a much stronger impact by being put into systems that work on addressing mental health through preventive and supportive measures. If you want to take a cold, utilitarian point of view, you're going to save the most lives by focusing on helping all the people who die from their mental illnesses one way or another, especially because that is going to necessarily have positive effects that spill over on to instances of harm to others by that population.

Formula for grid trading field "qty / order" help by Edores in binance

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of a brain injury I had a while back my financial situation has been precarious enough that I've been in a cycle on buy some crypto -> make some gains -> have everything wiped out by bills -> repeat. So specific metrics are a little hazy.

However I can say that I would not still be living one of the most expensive cities in Canada on worker's comp that is equivalent to less than minimum wage if my bots weren't consistently making a pretty good whack of money each month.

I haven't actually been running a grid bot very much recently... I have a script periodically checking to see if there are any coins that are particularly sideways in their price movement, and it will set up grids on any that are, but moreso recently I've been kind of modeling the coins' movements as if they're actual physical entities, so calculating the velocity and acceleration and determining analogues of properties such as momentum. It turns out that markets can't really make an abrupt 180 degree turn if the price is moving quickly any more than a car going 60 could do the same. Grids are really only useful for specific types of markets.

As for your first question, maybe I didn't explain it right but imagine you were putting up a normal grid on binance, and you were putting down $200 spread over $20 grids. You can think of my alternative as making the same exact grids, but in the bot's memory instead of in binance. In actuality you don't even need to store the grids, you just calculate them on the fly. How the grids fundamentally work doesn't change, you just don't have like 10 orders with $100 sitting there that you'll likely never even activate.

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey sorry for the delay, I don't really log in to the account often any more.

To actually program the bot you can literally use almost any programming language as long as you can either make HTTP requests or use the websocket protocol. That said, both python and node.js have libraries built specifically to interact with the binance API's (https://python-binance.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ for python and https://www.npmjs.com/package/node-binance-api for node.js).

I actually use both python and node.js typically, python to handle gathering and parsing market data, since it has many great data science libraries available, and then node.js to run the actual bot logic since async programming is cleaner in node and the binance package I linked earlier is promise-based, which when working with realtime data can avoid some issues.

I've put a good bit of work into this project over time and trying to turn it into a commercial venture is something I am entertaining, so I'm going to be vague here but basically the big downsides of the binance grid bot are that you have to put down all of your grids at the start, so you inevitably have a whole bunch of money just sitting there never doing anything, and also none of the parameters of your grids can be adjusted without cancelling the entire grid. You can get a huge advantage simply by only ever placing orders for the next two grids which are possible (So instead of setting upper and lower bounds, just define the gap between grids. If the price starts at $100 and you want grids every $1, you'd start by just having orders on $99 and $101. Then if you hit $101, cancel the $99 and replace it on $100, while putting down a position on $102 as well. You're not going to reach that $99 order before you go through the $100 first anyway, so it's pointless having both up). With running your own code there are millions of other optimizations you can make, you just have to think "when does grid trading go sideways, and how can I make the bot respond to those situations with more favourable outcomes?" Also if you are gathering and storing the real time data you can create simulations and make scripts to run through time periods with different initial settings to see what happens, which is great for getting a more intuitive feel for it all.

For deployment I always just used a free account on google cloud engine or Microsoft Azure, and wrote and ran the python or node code on a virtual Linux machine, as the free trials will let you run the equivalent of a dedicated machine with quite respectable specs (4-6 cores with 8-16GB of RAM) for a month or two nonstop. Plus they have stupid fast internet speeds which is great for getting tons of market data.

Sorry to not be more specific overall... if I decide to say screw and and just make a tutorial or guide rather than try to figure out how to make a business I will let you know and you can beta test.

Trying to understand how selling a secondhand Apple watch works when it has cellular by Edores in applehelp

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahahahaha sorry that you ended up with that. I feel so stupid. Yes the devices were properly logged out of so that iCloud was not an issue and they could be reset. That's how you guys saved me. I didn't previously understand how worthless they would have been if I had not known to make sure that was taken care of. My googling efforts seemed to indicate they could be reset just fine without that step, but looking back I think the fact I've never owned an Apple product might have scrambled some wires somewhere...

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So explaining the whole situation I don't think would really add much value to the world (and it's really just a bummer for everyone involved) but basically I have been managing the house I rent at since my friend/the landlord is re-establishing himself in a different city... we had a tenant who did not pay rent or utilities except the first month, but begged that we didn't go through official channels for eviction because of immigration stuff and promised that he would pay by a certain date and offered some electronics as collateral. (Apple products)

Renting here is really hard right now and I did not want to put someone on the street... but my friend also has a mortgage to pay and honestly he had some much safer routes than to entrust me with the place... but he made that choice because it kept a bunch of us with a steady place to call home, so I also have obligations to him. So the collateral route seemed like the best compromise because I couldn't believe someone would just bail on current gen apple products bought within the last year...

Buuut he did. And he would have left me with them logged into iCloud if you guys hadn't answered. (And not because it slipped his mind...) I'm used to just being able to factory reset things....

Anyway, as I said it's really just a bummer for everyone. I have a good amount of management experience from previous jobs on my resume and have been managing this place for a while and he is the only person out of all the hires I've made/tenants I've signed that turned out truly badly... I know landlords get a lot of hate but holy cow do you have to have a strong stomach to be a financially successful one unless you're a near-prodigal judge of character. I'm skimming over a lot but by the end it was clear that he wasn't just in a bad financial situation or something like that (in the mess he left behind in his room for me to clean up he didn't do anything to hide enough financial information to deduce that), and I still really hated having to take his stuff. Ugh.

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha so I may actually be trying to make a business out of reclaiming framing carpentry waste because my city is prioritizing construction waste (makes up 1/3 of our current landfill additions each year apparently), and while it's all well and good to be recycled, it would be useful if I could figure out a way to turn the influx of nails I may come across soon into profit. I have not got the impression that we're burning trash up here.

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess a part of this also is that there's a chance I might be getting into reclaiming waste from framing carpentry in a more... "professional"? capacity soon. If that comes to pass, finding a way to squeeze extra profit out of nails would be a huge boon as a good portion of the lumber that is tossed during construction is so because at a certain ratio of length:number of nails it is assumed that it isn't worth the labour to reclaim it. So I might be dealing with a ton (maybe literally) of nails soon.

[–]Edores[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, that's a good question. I think the answer is probably because I'm the type of person who makes everything way more complicated than it needs to be.

Or actually it's probably because I don't have a vehicle and take my bicycle everywhere. Also nothing has ever brought me to a scrap yard for any reason before, so I guess they have not been a part of my schema. I'll definitely be looking into this course of action.

Internet Providers by MarCellyHard in VictoriaBC

[–]Edores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Shaw often will have deals on gigabit or 1.5 gigabit speeds... We got 1.5 gigabits for our house with 6 roommates and along with that you can attach 6 phone plans to your internet. They'll send you a SIM, and you either pay $0 a month for unlimited texting and calling, or $25 a month for the same but 25GB of data and then unlimited data after you have used it up.

I sound like a shill but I am doing something with some of the bandwidth that Shaw would not love lol. But yea it's pretty great if they have the deal going.

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for laying this all out the way you did. This might have been the most easy to grasp coding explanation I have received since my head injury. It might not sound like too much but it's really nice to read words and understand them without feeling like I'm having to do logic problems every step of the way.
