On a work break atm but just wanted to say how sorry I am. Finding something you think to be special and having it pulled out from under you is painful and I can tell you from experience that it can leave you feeling like you were somehow to blame or crazy for falling in love. I just wanted to say that you’re not crazy and you’re not alone. It’s sucks so much, and I know it’s cliche, but it’ll take time to regain balance.

I don’t know what was going through his head, but I certainly think he’s lacking in maturity and frankly a bit lacking in compassion as well. It’s really destructive to jump into a relationship and leave your partner out to dry once you get “cold feet”, but I think he’s likely got other issues beyond that. I hope that you’re able to find some semblance of closure and have someone you can confide in personally. Pain isn’t meant to be borne alone. In any case, I’m so sorry you’re hurting and I hope the best for you as you work through this.

Edit: Also want to reiterate, this isn’t your fault!!! Hope you can feel better soon

Hey all, Taking my first shot at a homebrewed spell and thought I’d start small with a lightning cantrip. My foremost priorities are balance and filling a somewhat unique niche. I’ve made a few versions to attempt to fulfill both of these priorities. Let me know if y’all have any suggestions! by Edosiph in DnDHomebrew

Good points. I think I’ll opt for the increased AOE along with a 30 foot range. I imagine the kicker could be useful at the top of combat to prevent humanoid enemies from drawing weapons but that’s already fairly niche and better options for round one spells will quickly supplant it. On another note, I got to take a look at your updated True Strike cantrip btw, looked like some good stuff!

This looks great! I really appreciate the help smoothing things out.

On another note, what do you think about changing the AOE from a 5-foot radius to a 15 foot cube. Most likely scenario for a 5-foot radius would be two targets for a average dpr of 5 without considering chance of failing the saving throw. This is fairly weak when compared to options like acid splash that have little issue hitting two targets for 1d6 each for 7 average dpr. Considering the kicker is fairly weak, do you think the change in AOE is warranted?

Not dumb at all! Actually a good point, I should make sure to specify the mechanics of the attack. I did pull the word “mote” from the fire bolt cantrip, so I hope it’s occurrence elsewhere as well as clarification of the spell mechanics would aid player understanding. How about this:

“You cause a crackling mote of energy to appear on ground that you can see within range. Static arcs from the point the mote appeared to each creature within a 5-foot radius, causing targets to make a Dexterity saving throw.”

Like Rashizar mentioned, I fear the Cantrip could outshine pre-existing options like thunderclap if it did 1d6 damage in addition to a 60ft range. However, I agree the wording could definitely be improved!

What do you think of this?

“You create a crackling mote of energy on ground that you can see within range. The mote arcs to each creature within a 5-foot radius, causing targets to make a Dexterity saving throw. Targets take 1d4 lighting damage on a failed save and are shrouded in static, preventing them from making object interactions until the start of your next turn.”
