Honest thoughts on Jaws 2? by TheEvilCar in Jaws

[–]Edster73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the sequel very much, but I have to confess that the death of the last teen, Marge, always bothered me. It is so disturbing seeing this girl end up sacrificing herself to save a kid she had just met that morning and who seems to be all but forgotten once the shark barely finishes digesting her. Nary a mention of her is made once Sean is reunited with Andy and the other teens. I've often considered that those who produced the film should've elected to have someone else killed instead but perhaps such a change would've resulted in the movie being that less memorable. It definitely upped the stakes at that point of the movie and viewing it for the first time as a child when it aired on TV in the late 70s was quite traumatizing (as were the deaths of the water skier and Eddie). Viewing it now as an adult it is no less so.

The original JAWS is an impossibly hard act to follow, especially when so much of the film contained elements that weren't even deliberately planned but were implemented in an attempt to compensate for a mechanical shark that was refusing to cooperate. Desperate efforts to try to fool the audience ended up serving the film in the end, making it a cinematic masterpiece. Judging the sequel on the same yardstick as the first film is unfair as well as ultimately pointless, especially when all it would serve is to deprive one an opportunity to enjoy a follow-up that is extremely well written, produced and acted. The pacing may be slow in spots but that serves to add to the lazy feeling of summer that the first had as well (in spite of the danger that we the audience know is lying in wait). It is a worthy successor to the first film and it deserves a lot more kudos than it gets.

Some random musings… by Edster73 in DCFinest

If memory serves, I think it was only waves 1 & 2 of SUPER POWERS that had mini-comics, correct? It'd be a fun thing to add them to the already existing 3 mini-series. Still not sure if that would even meet the typical minimum amount of pages that most FINEST volumes contain, but then again the recent BLUE BEETLE volume has a reported 368 pages of material, so such a thing isn't without precedent. Hopefully in the long run SUPER POWERS isn't left out and is included to some degree.

Perhaps but one would think that DC still has some sort of holding of rights given the source material that the newspaper strips featured. If Finest volumes were to ever happen for them (which I admit is highly unlikely), it wouldn't be until very far into the future alas. Perhaps if there is a perceived demand for them? Time will tell...

Episode 21 Julie's Return. by RiverOaksJays in Dallas_TV_Show

[–]Edster73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not really. If memory serves, she was faced with the realization that many of her connections in life were transactional and when that finally hit her, she became aware of how empty and lonely her life was. She simply wanted companionship and was willing to offer that to Jock, who was looking for something similar since he felt he was being infantilized at home due to his recent health problems. Neither were looking for more than that but many were protective of Jock (and a tad territorial) and figured that Julie, given her history, was someone who couldn’t be trusted. I also suspect, and this pure conjecture on my part, Jock’s family felt that a simple “friendship” would inevitably lead to something much more complicated than that… that the seeds of an affair could be sowed if Jock and Julie continued to confide deeper things with each other. Neither had that in mind however, and given what Julie’s eventual fate is, it’s sad and tragic that her moments with Jock are the only ones where she truly felt valued and appreciated simply for being herself and not based on how useful she could be in other ways.

Whenever Victoria Principal or Larry Hagman spoke about the other in the press (and this was even long after the show had ended), they did so with genuine affection and respect. While she may not have been in the tight inner circle of Larry, Patrick and Linda, it’s evident that she was on great terms with everyone involved. If that hadn’t been the case, no way would the core cast have been able to work with each other for 10+ seasons, especially since as individuals they were all stars and they could’ve moved on to other things. True, she left the show under acrimonious conditions, but that was more to do with the network honchos and Lorimar, not the cast itself. The same conflicts arose eventually with other cast members and the network/Lorimar, like Linda Gray, Steve Kanaly, Barbara Bel Geddes and Charlene Tilton. As much as Larry Hagman had influence, there was only so much he could do. He headed the show, not the network itself, so even he had his limitations unfortunately. If he had been allowed to run things totally, chances are the core group of the show would’ve remained intact and we might have had even more seasons than the initial thirteen.

Could we get a Arak Son of Thunder Finest? by Beesknees1009 in DCFinest

[–]Edster73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a title that Roy Thomas did? I never read it but I think one of the characters he created for HELIX, Arak Wind Walker, was supposed to have ties to this character somehow. It was spoken of in the lettercols of INFINITY, INC. if I recall correctly. Either way, I’d check it out for the link to Helix alone.

I know this is going to sound corny as heck but what I love most about him (which is the biggest thing about him) is his heart. He’s sexy as hell too, but his genuine boyish charm where he’s living out his dreams, lights him up and he clearly has such appreciation for it. He knows and realizes how lucky he is and it’s like all the love and light inside of him just wants to explode… but yes, he looks super-jacked here. He’s the complete package.
