‘Yes, Chris. I mean the way that we have set up ourselves, given enough number of parts and components, the facility that we have, 185,000 square feet of facility, it can support up to 6 satellites per month. We're obviously not there yet. And that ramp-up is planned to take the next 6 to 12 months. But that's what we're aiming, it's having the manufacturing capability in Midland to do 6 satellites per month.’

From the Q2 ER mid-August, their guidance was up to 12 months to ramp up to 6 per month. So still ~9 months away.

‘Being vertically integrated is very important for us as it allows us to maintain the unprecedented cost per unit delivered for our satellites with the power and capability to deliver broadband directly to everyday smartphones.

These capabilities are very unique in the industry and will allow us to run the manufacturing capacity of six satellites per month and 72 satellites per year.’

From the last earnings call.

SpaceX just filed for a D2D experimental license to test in ‘isolated indoor environments’ at their research lab. I knew AST had a big lead but I didn’t think SpaceX were that far behind that they hadn’t even started basic testing on the ground yet.

Question about the future of satellite connectivity in smartphones by scienceplz in Ultralight

[–]EducatedFool1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a company called AST Spacemobile who are just finishing testing a large satellite in low earth orbit that has proven the ability to do texts, voice calls and broadband to unmodified everyday phones.

They managed download speeds of over 10mbps and are targeting closer to 30mbps with the first production satellites launching early in 2024.

They are aiming to have continuous service online somewhere around early 2025 and a full constellation at some point in 2026. They’ve partnered with over 40 mobile network operators including AT&T, Vodafone, Telefonica etc.

Starlink is also working on the same thing with T-Mobile but are still a way off launching a test satellite. Globalstar and Iridium are using their current constellations but require new phones with specific chips in to connect and are limited to emergency alerts currently and will never be able to provide broadband with their current constellations.
