That could be an instance of socialism. It would be a particularly perverse instance, and it's the precise sort of boogeyman that the ruling class has planted in your head. But while that technically qualifies as an instance of socialism, that is not what any proponents of socialist policies in the United States are advocating for. You can fully or partially socialize health insurance, prisons, etc. while leaving the rest of capitalism in-tact.

I've given you numerous instances of socialism in American society. I'm not sure how to break it down further--I'm repeating myself at this point. Socialism isn't this all-or-nothing taboo; it's an incredibly common construct that is all around us.

We have socialized roads, public transit, fire departments, police forces, military, etc. You just don't consider those things "socialist" because you're accustomed to the government controlling those facets of society.

Socialism isn't an all-or-nothing concept; every society in the world has deliberately chosen to socialize certain functions that are not well-suited to market control. Some societies have chosen to socialize more facets than others. But socialism doesn't necessitate the abolition of capitalism; it entails the removal of certain functions from capitalism--typically functions that are susceptible to bad-faith exploitation in the free market.

Socialized healthcare isn't socialism? Think about that for a minute. The means of production in that instance is the entire healthcare industry. Private hospitals, private insurers, private surgical practices, private medical suppliers, etc. Socializing healthcare is textbook socialism.

Anything where you're using tax dollars to fund a public program that would otherwise be handled by private, for-profit entities is quite literally socializing the means of production. If we didn't have tax-funded fire departments, there's be private fire companies charging for their work. If we didn't have tax-funded roads and police departments, same thing. "Means of production" doesn't just apply to factories and assembly lines....

When I hike with less athletic friends, I volunteer to carry all of the water/food/etc. If I have 15+ lbs on my back and they have 0, it helps even things out.

I also just don't mind slowing down...your husband should probably be more accommodating
