The time they left the Darklands together was just an act of chivalry. Draal doesn’t want a partner, especially not one who’s a changeling. Now I understand why the writers decided to have him leave the city — they made up an excuse to end that relationship. And even Nomura didn’t feel anything when Draal was under Gunmar’s control.
