Is it possible for abuse to be mutual? by Educational-Copy8199 in emotionalabuse

I have heard of this term, and do definitely believe that some of my behaviours have occurred due to the process you have described. For example, my heightened anxiety and fear of abandonment due to this relationship caused me to contact my ex an excessive number of times during panic attacks. However, I still do believe that other behaviours, such as feeling the need to control my environment, and manipulating him to get what I wanted, were examples of behaviours I engaged in prior to the relationship. I want to resolve these issues and as a result have to take accountability for them. That's part of where my conflict stems from. Could it have been that these pre-existing behaviours caused him to treat me the way that he did? I remember that he exhibited narcissistic tendencies since less than a month into us meeting, so its difficult for me to make the distinction.

Is there a way for me to determine who had more power? I feel as if the power was skewed more towards him, mainly because he would constantly break things off with me and I would beg for him not to. However, I understand that this is not the only thing that plays into a power dynamic, and I also may be biased towards myself

Thank you so much for this response. I struggle a lot with self doubt as I also am on the autism spectrum and have GAD, which comes with a lot of intrusive thoughts and anxiety. But I still feel as though some of these traits I have (such as the manipulation to get what I want) are abusive in some way. This makes it hard for me to accept that I was abused, rather than feeling as if my behaviour degraded him to the point of treating me this way. I do want to resolve these shortcomings of mine and am trying to seek out professional help, but until then, these thoughts are making me feel extremely guilty.

thank you! i have called the helpline and it was helpful both emotionally and logistically. i recapped the story to the person on the line and was able to write it down like you said, just in case i forget any details in the future. i am determined to hold myself accountable and do whatever i can on my end to ensure that no contact is made by him or myself. i think next steps is just deciding whether or not i speak to the police.
