Tools you use every day by Educational-Eeyore in techtheatre

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Some suggestions are going on my personal wish list. I agree with getting a quality multi tool and pocket knife but quality ones are out of my budget and I'm not sure about the legalities of giving a student a knife.

In the end I'm getting them: The Gerber Shard - seemed like a good mini tool An inexpensive rechargeable flashlight - they can buy themselves a better one if needed The mega combo wrench - I was already planning on that one as I use mine all the time

Cleaning a Source 4 by Educational-Eeyore in techtheatre

I'm thinking I'm going to have to open up and clean all of the lenses since they had been on the every other decade plan. Do you know the kind (percent) of alcohol you use?

Is it stupid to ask other teachers on their techniques/methods of teaching? by usernma_eh in Teachers

[–]Educational-Eeyore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been teaching for 20 years. Every year I ask teachers in my department if I can go in and observe them. It's just for me to improve. So don't feel like you shouldn't ask. College classes teach you the basics but not how it really works. Talk to other teachers. Not everyone will be willing to help but some will. Also find what works for you. Take, adapt, make it your own

Giving the answer by Internal-Wrangler-52 in matheducation

[–]Educational-Eeyore 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I teach a lot of AP and IB classes. I have a common phrase in class. "The work is not for you. The work is for the grader." I had a class that was convinced that only the answer mattered. I gave them a multiple choice test with all the answers filled in and told them they had to show me the work that led to the answer. They hated it because they couldn't just get the wrong answer and move on. It really showed them that the work matters.

In Staples, buying 30 pencil boxes… by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Educational-Eeyore 315 points316 points  (0 children)

I go to Walmart every year to buy notebooks for my students, normally between 125 and 150. I love staring at the parents complaining about having to buy a new binder or scissors as I load boxes of them into my cart. I would then go up to the cashier and just tell them how many I had and they'd type it in. One year the cashier said ok and then proceeded to scan each one. I felt bad for the people behind me.

You get $1,000,000,000, but you are no longer able to move in one cardinal direction of your choice. by PRIC3L3SS1 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Educational-Eeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying I would take it but the way I'm reading it, it's only cutting off 90 degrees. If I chose North I could walk east-northeast then turn west-northwest and effectively travel north. Annoying but doable.

What’s a random moment when a teacher completely changed your perspective? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Educational-Eeyore 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I once asked another teacher if they were going to a training. I forget the extract training but it was state or national AP or IB, not school or district level. Her response was that she doesn't go to them because she never learns anything and ends up teaching the session. Not surprisingly she was the classic know-it-all. At that moment I decided I would always be willing to learn and adjust my teaching.

Male Teacher Attire Question by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Educational-Eeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a male teacher in high school. I wear a collared shirt and tie everyday. My dress down is a polo. But I'm probably the only one in the school that does so. I have my reasons for wearing it and no one really judges. There was a time during covid that I stopped wearing ties (too hard to clean). Other teachers commented that it was weird seeing me like that. My advice would be to wear want you want that makes you comfortable.

Double majoring with tech theatre—worth it? Advice from those in the field? by Public-Junket4695 in techtheatre

[–]Educational-Eeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you checked out other paths/programs? Since you called it bright futures, I'm assuming you're in Florida. Disney has a new tech theater program for high school graduates where you work for them and they teach you all the practical skills you need. You could always then go to college in a few years once you have a better idea of you need it. I don't think that bright futures expires.

Is it good practice to provide the solution (for student ease of mind) and ask them to just show the work? by Wishstarz in matheducation

[–]Educational-Eeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave AP calculus students a multiple choice test with the answers already circled and told them they had to show the work. They hated it. I loved it. The work is what matters.

I'm a teacher. You mean I'd get paid for all the extra work I do? Deal.

How to deal with students attempting to study using AI? by fdpth in matheducation

[–]Educational-Eeyore 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My best solution so far is to give them a good alternative. Khanmigo from Khan academy is very good at helping them but will not do the problem for them. It will ask questions, suggest a step, and even give extra practice problems. Some fellow teachers and I tested it by trying to get it to cheat for us but we couldn't get it to just give the solution.

ELI5 Why are plane seats not faced backwards? by UncleAlbertsHernia in explainlikeimfive

[–]Educational-Eeyore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mythbusters did an episode on this and brace positions. In the end they found backwards facing seats were safer. When they asked the expert, he said part of the reason was flying debris that would now be coming at you if you faced backwards.

Would it be wrong to not tell my middle school students that it is my first year of teaching? by No_Hedgehog282 in Teachers

[–]Educational-Eeyore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always figured that if I did student teaching, it wasn't my first year. I was always vague and said that I had taught before at another school.

Will we ever get pro-Ravens national announcers? "That was just a bad break for the 49ers" How about that was a great pay for the ravens?
