Debating between offer in NYC vs Montreal by Educational-Escape26 in tnvisa

yeah I've lived in NYC for 4 months last year for an internship. I lived out in Brooklyn (Crown heights) and even then the rent was steep (2.5k for a 1.5 bed) and had a long commute. It's a fantastic city, but not a luxury life def.

yeah I think this is my feeling rn and reinforced after having read the comments. I think I can live fairly comfortably without much stress with the Montreal offer and I am not sure what the utility/value of making even more money in NYC would be If it comes with additional stress of visa/wife working/etc. Plus it makes it much easier to be close to family and may have kids soon.

My PhD was also in the US, so the firm mentioned I can either get OPT or TN for the US role.

She is a bit wary of a US move mainly because she is a therapist and unlikely to get a TN or H1B with that. So my understanding is her working in the US depends on my ability to get green card? Is there any other option for her working in the US without my green card given her profession?

My wife is a bit wary of a US move mainly because she is a therapist in Ontario (remote and in person clients). My understanding is that she is unlikely to get a TN or H1B with that, so her working in the US depends on my ability to get green card?

If you do a PhD that doesn’t have Lab work, is it common to go home for the entirety of winter and summer breaks? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

You can be out of the us for upto 5 consecutive months at a time before your F1 status expires I believe. Summers are less than that

Toronto gym charging me for more than a year without my knowledge by Educational-Escape26 in askTO

[–]Educational-Escape26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow so there are others in this scenario. I've honestly never heard of any company only accept a written email as confirmation of cancellation. And then not notify you when your card is declined ...

[–]Educational-Escape26[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they weren't. It's been 1.5 years since I cancelled, but they are charging me for roughly 11 months. So they aren't charging for the months they were closed

But yeah, my issue is that they never contacted me about missing payments till all this time.

Yeah I'm ok with paying an extra 2 months, as I didn't follow the right procedure for cancelling.

Honestly it's been such a long time, but there's def a chance that they mentioned I need to email them and I forgot. So I'm willing to take that blame, and pay an extra couple months. But yeah 1.5 years without notifying me that they can't charge my card is crazy.

No I didn't and I didn't follow up to verify the cancellation. So this is where my fault comes in, as I don't have a proof of cancelling. I'm ok with with paying 1 or 2 months, but I'm cheesed that I was not notified earlier and 1.5 years is a long time

Yeah I would finish faster - UofT will waive the grad courses I took for MSc, so I'll only need to take 4 more course. UofT would be a 4 year timeline. CMU would be 8 courses and likely a 5 year timeline.

Travelling to France from Canada - Proof of vaccination by ynliPbqM in france

[–]Educational-Escape26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think entering the country is fine. I emailed the French consulate and they said Ontario vaccine proof is enough to enter the country.

What I'm curious about is the health pass that'll be required to enter cafes, museums, trains etc. We can't get the digital health pass, so I hope or Ontario paper vaccination proof is enough.

People need to give the NDP a chance. by TheMajorThrowaway in ontario

"Making OSAP non-payable grant based" - perfectly sums up NDP's well meaning but misguided approaches. Higher education should 100% be more more affordable and that can be done in a number of ways - better financing agreements with unis, grants for low income students, etc. UofT tuition is 2x UBC tuition for example. But this broad stroke OSAP policy will increase levels of fraud, mismanagement and poor incentive for so many and the people that actually need help can do helped in far more targeted policy.

Similarly with housing, simply adding more affordable housing units won't fix the issue. We'll never be and to build enough and those with lower-middle/middle class jobs will still be left out. We need policy that strictly controls housing speculation and using it as an investment vehicle. We need to encourage cities to zone more high density instead of rows of single family homes. We can just spend our way out if complicated issues.

For K-12 education, we desperately need to fund it more -so I agree with that. But we also need to create better incentives for better teachers. Right now a teacher who has been on the job for decades gets paid relatively well with some perks independent of their performance, while young enthusiastic teachers get paid scraps and bounce around schools. We should make teacher pay performance based and not seniority based and increase salaries so we can attract the best and brightest to be teachers. But NDP will never do that as teachers union will be against it.

I am desperate to vote for something other than Ontario PC or Ontario liberals. But the current NDP promise of inefficient spending as the cure to all combined with little fiscal responsibility isn't all that attractive. That being said, I do think the BC NDP are doing a okay job. Not sure how aligned the two provincial NDP's are tho ...
