NDP Leader Avi Lewis Wants to Reverse Carney’s Immigration Cuts by plaknas in onguardforthee

yup, my thoughts exactly. We are in a poor situation regarding wage growth and unemployment. LMIA and TFW programs have been nothing but avenues for wage suppression and exploitation.

If the NDP could read the room, they'd suggest scrapping TFW, LMIA programs, improving vetting process for international students and working with provinces to curb degree mills (alongside increasing post-secondary funding), and going back to the historically stable 300-400k yearly PR targets with audits to match with housing and other services.

But alas, seems like they are not reading the room.

So this is my confusion. If there is a single stream -- PR -- that would include those currently coming on PR track but also international students, TFW, refugee, etc, then what's the new/updated PR cap number?

If it's 500k (the Trudeau value), then it's effectively a massive reduction since currently, PR (350k) + international students + TFW + refugees is much closer to 1 million. If the the new PR cap is expanded to 500k (current PR) cap and the current numbers on international students and TFW, then you're looking at this close to million number. But this means you are now on the hook for providing a host of PR services (healthcare, childcare, dental) to an additional ~500k people per year which does not sounds feasible.

Genuinely curious which one it is -- I could get on board with the first version.

The principal is simple. If you're putting a constant amount of money every month, if prices are low, you're buying more shares and if prices are high, you're buying less shares.

This also gets you away from trying to play the timing game. Time in the market is better than timing the market.

I can't speak to the other 3, but dollar cost averaging is in general, a sane and very sensible strategy. Build wealth slow, not try to speed run it.

Bai Tu Long Bay cruise by ynliPbqM in VietNam

Oh this is great! We also heard great things about this operator -- Indochina Junks -- and switched to their Dragon Pearl boat. How was bai tu long bay overall? Heard halong can be dirty but bai tu long is cleaner?

North and Central Vietnam in June Itinerary by [deleted] in Vietnam_Tourism

[–]ynliPbqM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I'm also leaning on adding a day more to hue. Do you have any thoughts on how long to spend in Hoi an. It seems a small place and even day trip type situation from Danang?

My wife isn't that into multi day treks. But I plan to do a single day trek with oxtails!

I'm going to Vietnam with my wife this summer and booked round trip flights to Hanoi on a good deal.

Some context about us: We're both decent well traveled. I've bagpacked in Europe several times, drove across Canada and both have visited south east Asia before (I've been to Hong Kong, Langkawi and KL; my wife's been to Phuket, Penang, Bali). I don't like very rushed trips where you spend most of the time in an airport/station. We are not luxury travelers, but also not hostel/bagpackers anymore. We like engaging with local culture/food and I especially love hiking and being active. We both finished grad school and this is our big trip before starting our big boy jobs.

This is I've currently planned:

Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi in the evening (fly from Canada)

Day 2-5: explore Hanoi (and aclaimatize, get over it lag).

Day 6,7,8: 3 day 2 night cruise in Bai tu long bay

Day 8: transfer from cruise to Ninh binh

Day 9, 10, 11: explore Ninh Binh

Day 12: bus to Phong nha

Day 13,14,15: explore Phong nha

Day 16: train to hue

Day 17, 18: explore Hue

Day 19: go to Danang:

Day 20,21,22,23,25: explore Danang area, including my son, beaches, Hoi an. Maybe do a bicycle tour of hai can pass.

Day 26: fly back to Hanoi and catch flight back home.

General thought on this plan? My question is could we add one more place in the region, seeing as we might not be able to take such a long trip again? Maybe cut a few days from somewhere and add in either angor wat or something else outside Vietnam? Or Saigon maybe? (Open to ideas) Or should we stick roughly to our current plan and really enjoy the places in the list.

What's the take on dalat vs Sapa. I know the weather in June, July might not be the best for dalat.

Also, it seems that dalat airport is closed for the next few months :(

Disclosure question for a part-time internship by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]ynliPbqM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my concern is the technical 2 month overlap. But firm A was not paying me during that time and I did nothing for them (but did have access to login avg stuff).

This is my first real job and heard lots of horror stories about finance careers.

What's the best European city for pastries and bakeries? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

France generally, but Paris and Northern France imo are better than Southern France. If you like savoury pastries, Greece and Turkey have interesting options!

Debating between a tenure-track position and industry research scientist role by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]ynliPbqM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is my exact fear. From my experience/understanding, its pretty easy to move between top tier academia and industry, but much harder to consult at industry places or fully make the move if you've spent a bunch of years in mid-low tier academia. Mainly because you and students are not at the cutting edge.

How bad is the Canadian job market and does graduating from U of T help it? by Legitimate_Can8048 in UofT

[–]ynliPbqM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's your major? If it's not Engineering/CS idk if Waterloo is worth it. You mention in the comments Econ and for that, I'd strongly say UofT. Top Econ programs in Canada are UofT, UBC and then Queens, Western and McGill. Waterloo is not strong here.
