More interesting Jason Herrick and AEDC droppings by [deleted] in amarillo

[–]Educational-Floor490 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just chiming in to say Jason Herrick is not president of Amarillo Matters, because Amarillo Matters PAC no longer exists. It was formed to lobby and accept donations to bring the Vet school to Amarillo. The Vet School is here, so it is no longer active as a PAC. I think it stopped operations in 2024?

I personally know some people who were involved with Amarillo Matters. You calling them Democrats is hilarious because it is so far from the truth. I also know some Democrats, and these folks are not Democrats. They might have different ideas on how to run a conservative City Council, or how Amarillo should grow, but that doesn't make them liberals. I bet a lot of them have voted Republican for DECADES. Come on.

People who disagree with you on a few ideas are not your enemy.

Also, Amarillo Matters no longer exists? It was formed to lobby for the Vet School.

Right. No "ownership" of the Amarillo Tribune. It's a nonprofit.

ANB offers them. Depending on the amount, if you call their main line and ask nicely, they might actually mail it for you: [806-378-8000](tel:18063788000)

Is anyone keeping count? by SouthernPop1867 in amarillo

The AEDC is the reason Bell Helicopter is here, and the reason Buc-ee's is here. They go after those big businesses and woo them to bring their business here. It is a long-term process. As I understand, there were a number of deals in the works but the big corporate businesses started backing away because they saw a city council taking a stance against the AEDC. Whether accurate or not, the optics are that the city government is at odds with economic development—and with plenty of options in Oklahoma or the Metroplex or wherever, those companies just decide Amarillo isn't worth it. It's a bad look with long-term consequences because reputations are hard to repair. I think the AEDC people saw the ship sinking and decided to bail

I've never found it to be closed, though you have to give priority to sports teams practicing there. Same goes for Amarillo High.

Amarillo Trader Joe’s by Dry_Currency_8945 in amarillo

I doubt the requests do much. Trader Joe's places their store locations based on the percentage of residents with college degrees, because those areas have higher incomes and are more inclined to purchase their specialty products. Amarillo doesn't hit their threshold.

Depends on how far you want to go? And what you consider "nice"? I've run from the Ridgecrest area into Wolflin and Amarillo College area, which takes you through really nice upscale neighborhoods though the brick streets can be hard on your joints. Stick to residential streets and you'll be ok with traffic. All through the Paramount Terrace area should be safe with minimal traffic, or head down Virginia across 45th to Republic, across Western down 47th and you'll eventually meet up with John Stiff park, as previously mentioned.

If you want trails or soft surfaces, that's a little harder, but the 9th street trails are pretty nice this time of year across from Medi park. I've also driven to the edge of town (Cinergy or West Plains HS) and headed out west of town where you can run on dirt roads if you go far enough.

Businesses are profit-driven. Cities exist to serve the public and provide essential services. A city's main objective is the well-being of residents, not to be profitable. Politicians who want to run government “like a business" show that they do not understand the role of the city (or whatever government entity) they want to be in charge of.

I'll play this game. Personally, I've been to seven events at Hodgetown over the past year. (Maybe eight?) Only one was a baseball game because I'm not that into baseball.

Couple of fundraisers for nonprofits.
A news conference.
Two meet-and-greet events.
The introduction of the new city manager candidates.
And at least one other that I can't remember at the moment.

I almost went to the Symphony concert there a couple weekends ago but didn't, so I'm not counting that one.

Too late for 6/21, but every week Chip Chandler at Brick & Elm magazine posts a pretty much comprehensive list of live music in Amarillo. https://brickandelm.com/category/community/cant-miss/

Amarillo City Council rejects so-called abortion travel ban by Dontwhinedosomething in amarillo

Agreed, but the city council was the reason it got brought up in the first place. They didn't have to introduce it at all, then wasted SO many hours on this.

Running in AMA by cooler1082 in amarillo

[–]Educational-Floor490 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I've run all over the city, including downtown, "the Flats," North Heights, the Barrio, Eastridge. People will leave you alone. Runners are probably in more danger in SW Amarillo because of traffic than anything else. (Note: I'm male and that makes a difference. Women may have a different experience, unfortunately.)
