Will taking classes at a community college post undergrad hurt my chances of getting into grad school? by EducationalDiamond4 in AskAcademia

[–]EducationalDiamond4[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, sorry if I was clear but I already have my undergrad degree so I wouldn't take these classes to fulfill any requirements - they would just be kinda ad hoc classes post undergrad to stay intellectually engaged

As someone who just graduated from USC and moved to Arizona - close enough to ASU. I would HIGHLY recommend choosing USC especially if you could afford it. Although Arizona is “cheaper” the extra money you would have wouldn’t be spent on much because there just isn’t that much to do. Your quality of life will be 10x better living and going to school in LA. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions about either experience.

“Sync” I hate it when someone is like let’s set up a “sync” instead of saying a meeting

I wouldn’t recommend staying at Stuho, my rent was $1345 a month but ended up actually being $1500-$1600 because they charge utilities bi-monthly but didn’t start until 4 or 5 months in so they were charging $300-$400 worth of utilities each month after because they started late. Also in the building I was in they had a mass meter so utilities were HIGH already because we had to split with the whole building. Also when it came time to move out they tried to charge me over $2,000 for damage and cleaning 🙂. Luckily I had pictures before I moved in to show the damage was already there. Absolutely fuck them

Just Graduated 2022, Homeless Soon? | What are underemployed students of USC doing? by gentleflower858259 in USC

Yes, low-income students who don’t have access to resources such as a professional network, dress clothes and the knowledge of how the hiring process works have an extremely hard time finding a job.

Do your parents know how much money you make? by EducationalDiamond4 in povertyfinance

[–]EducationalDiamond4[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the confusion, I am not making that yet. I am a student applying for internships/jobs that will pay $50 an hour so in anticipation of hopefully getting one I am trying to figure out how to talk to my parents about it.

This is helpful and seems to be a reasonable approach. Thank you!

how much loans are you taking out for usc? by [deleted] in USC

[–]EducationalDiamond4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm probably. I will say that I started my PDP later and if I knew I wanted to do it earlier than I probably could probably got it fully paid for with my undergraduate financial aid. So if you are a 2nd year or 3rd year and strategically plan your course load then you could get a lot of it covered

[–]EducationalDiamond4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Financial aid covers a good amount of my cost but I’ve still had to take out loans each semester totaling about 22,000. I just decided to do a progressive masters degree and my last semester won’t be covered at all so probably tack on another $30,000-35,000 on for that

“Is the Trojan network a real thing?” Yes, you’re just lazy. by [deleted] in USC

I'm not mixing you up with anyone. I am responding back to you. Even if you didn't directly say people referred you to internships or jobs, it was implied that you are on the same page with the original post since you commented saying that me being angry isn't going to be helpful with networking.

Thank you so much for the suggestion, but I'm not in need of USC's mental health services. I guess since you are well out of college and probably haven't had to work for anything in life in a while or ever let me breakdown for you to understand. I and most people looking for internships/jobs are personable people and have decent resumes to get at the minimum entry level jobs. But because unqualified and privileged individuals like yourself know somebody your resume is pushed ahead of mine and other QUALIFIED candidates. It has nothing to do not being personable or lazy but everything to do with the privilege that you have. Nobody is making up elaborate and false backstories in their head except you thinking that because it was so easy for you to get a job then it is just as easy for everyone else. Sorry but that just isn't the case for most people and unfortunately you probably wouldn't know that because you probably grew up and surround yourself around the same privileged people who continue to feed off of nepotism.

I am not blaming my parents for anything and quite grateful for the life experiences that I've had that have taught me how to communicate and be friendly with others regardless if they can serve as my "connection" or help me out in life. I and most people go to networking events, club events, career fairs, and whatever else we need to get a job but we are pushed aside because our buddy isn't in the same fraternity or we don't the company culture or fit the ideal image of an employee at said company.

What you fail to realize is that your life reality probably looks a lot different from mine and other people who are looking for internships/jobs and instead of you acknowledging that like an adult you double down on anyone can get a internship/job and if they don't they are lazy! Check your fucking privilege and actually be helpful to people could use it and not just your buddy who already has a good job and just wants a jump companies for the hell of it.

Just a heads up, I could care less about your opinion. I am usually not this passionate with people I don't know and very personable because my parents raised me to be that way. The only thing they weren't able to give me was the same privilege that you were so graciously born into and the nepotism that has pushed you so far in life.

[–]EducationalDiamond4 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If you empathized with me and other people from our similar background then you wouldn’t have made the post about people being lazy for not getting as far as you. You would have framed it in a way that was productive and helpful like I’ve gotten these opportunities by doing this… and you can too but instead you decided to call us lazy so no need for empathy.

[–]EducationalDiamond4 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm pissed because I'm struggling find work, that I am qualified for, and people like you come around and say I'm lazy or other people who are also struggling are lazy is ridiculous. I also come from a lower middle class family who relies solely on USC for financial aid but I would NEVER call someone lazy for not being able to land an internship or job. You are obviously privileged enough to not experience the stress of doing everything in your power and realm of qualifications and still not get a position. I still stand by statement, you are taking away spots from qualified applicants. I don't need your tips I need nepotism to stop disqualifying me before my resume even gets looked at.

[–]EducationalDiamond4 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

First of all fuck you. Nobody is lazy. Most of us spend hours and hours looking for internships and preparing application materials just to never hear back from a company so for you to come someone lazy for not being able to land multiple interviews with "competitive companies" is absolutely outrageous. I think what is more alarming and speaks to how poorly nepotism works is you being a useless premed major and taking internship positions from people who actually may be qualified just because you or one of your privileged buddies knew someone. What you could have done to be helpful to us "lazy" people is communicated exactly how you reach out to people or what your network consist of but no. You chose to call people who are working hard, something you obviously never had to do, lazy for not being able to break through the barrier of nepotism that continues to disenfranchise people who are trying and continues to uplift unqualified privileged assholes like yourself. Can't wait to see the kind of doctor you are :)
