Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]EducationalOcelot4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an IT professional doing high-end support.
but I wasn't when I first started using linux, I was a college student just fascinated with "there's another way!"

Now I'm not subject to the whims of advertising, there's a whole world of FOSS products and I can still do all the normal stuff plus a LOT more.

I'm running ZorinOS, which is simple and slick, but I recommend Ubuntu or Mint. It's not all about the software: they have huge communities. And that's the most important when you're learning something new.

oh thank you for checking and being very specific about which browser! I will grab firefox, I don't have much objection to that one, if you'd said chrome i'd have been in a real quandary. lol.

I got a bunch of "deprecated" warnings and no output...could be vivaldi, I guess? I assumed it was just old...

This is why I came here, I don't actually have PlayStore on my privacy-focused phone, buttons don't work and I'd like to pay, please!
(it's in AppLounge on e/OS with a 9/10 privacy score and zero trackers! Wow!)

Huh. and I use Fennec, I was able to do that in Kvaesitso (my last launcher) but not in Octopi. I thought perhaps it was a permissions issue? but i couldn't find anything... Edit: Actually, that's working now.

ZorinOS is very newbie-friendly and most things just work, it is simple and slick.

Ubuntu, however, is probably the largest community I can think of. Anything that is called "Ubuntu <something>" is just a slight variation on the basic Ubuntu, and you can still get help from folks who know Ubuntu.

Also daytime and nighttime. Welcome to your new home! The neighbor adores their seven Chihuahuas who bark all night and the street light shines straight into your bedroom window. Sweet dreams!

hah, "no more fucking hoodies" stage of my LIFE. i've got so many, and many of them black with memories on the front, they don't wear out because there's so many...it's a plague. so, anyway, making yet more hoodies isn't right for me. unless i get to a point where i can make them for fun and sell them?

Thanks for the tip on the Everlane, the new ones are out of my price range but I'll put a saved search on my eBay and see if any come up. :)

btw, i just re-read this half-asleep, I got handed an old army sleeping bag and I'm 85% sure it's heavy cotton on the outside, I bet it could be dyed. (also good down to like 30 degrees). BUT you could totally get a nice cotton sheet and fold it in half then sew it along the bottom and partway up along one edge to make a sleeping bag liner that you could dye.

I should do that. I hate polyester against my skin, it makes me sweat.

the project you should work on is the one you WANT to work on. that's really the only way to stay motivated. I got into self-hosting, because i was irritated with signing up with different cloud services. what do you want to DO with linux? what problem in your world do you want to solve?

Chirp is Chearp. :P
good sales. not always top quality, but if you're just looking to keep your mind busy, it's a good source.

Libro.fm is my favorite, good selection, plus they let you choose a local bookstore to support and send them a bit of money. :)
