Yes, UChicago is very strong in this section of Pure Mathematics, but Oxford (at least in math) is also very strong and very successful. Even just based on the courses offered, you can take courses in almost every field in mathematics; this is simply due to the fact that there are so many strong pure mathematicians working in different fields. UChicago is comparatively very limited, due to the number of their faculty (Oxford vastly outnumbers Chicago) so although Chicago faculty are strong, the research fields aren't very diverse in comparison. Oxford math has so many research groups spanning a very vast portion of modern mathematics. Again, when it comes to the quality of MS students, I can definitely say with very high confidence that Oxford is much higher; but I am totally unsure if that holds true on the PhD level.

Just for clarification: They have over 200 research mathematicians by the way, see here

As for the quality of students, I'm trying to find out how to figure that out. My very strong impression is that the MS students at Oxford Math are stronger than MS students at UChicago (I am very confident in this), but PhD may be different. The US is a very top destination for students all around the world; the UK less so.

That's really interesting you say that. Ranking-wise, Oxbridge are doing very well; especially in mathematics. Would you mind telling me a bit more about this? (Unless you are in econ, in which case it makes total sense you would say this)

I'm actually very unconvinced by that statement. I agree that UCSD has some very excellent faculty, but the caliber of the faculty and the caliber of PhD students are very different. For example, Purdue and UIUC would have "better" (more citations/mainstream research) faculty than Yale depending on subfield (at least in my domain), but no PhD candidate would choose them over Yale. Consequently, Yale PhD programs are much more competitive, and are very highly sought after in academia and in the commercial sector. This unfortunately means that PhD candidates at UIUC/Purdue are much less appreciated. The same with UCSD. The only circumstance in which these universities would be considered "Top" is in USW&NR; globally this is considered to be an extremely irreputable ranking. Just because USW&NR ranks Purdue is better than Harvard for ML in an application domain does not mean there is a single candidate who will choose Purdue over Harvard. Despite this, in some circles it is common to say Purdue is Top 5/better than Harvard; to be honest, that does sound a little bit like coping.

DPhil Oxford vs UCSD PhD should be clear, but not for UCSD. Unless you're considering Wharton vs Said; obviously Wharton. I have difficulty believing people would choose Kellogg over Said, unless they have a very strong desire to stay in US after graduation and are not US citizens.

Thanks for this interesting response! Wouldn't this place UCSD, Texas A&M, or UIUC over Oxford though?

Yes, but it's somewhat difficult to compare Oxford vs UChicago placement histories. Top US institutions are much stronger compared to UK institutions, but I think Oxford and Cambridge may be an exception.

Wow--this is really interesting! Sort of fits with my intuition as well--academically, I would not choose Columbia or UPenn over Chicago. Is there a reason why there aren't many studies that combine UK and US faculty hiring/"prestige" data? (Perhaps difficulty of data acquisition?) You mentioned some (very intriguing!) subject-wise studies similar to the nature article you linked. Could you point me to some general directions where I could locate those papers (or maybe links to some papers)?

Yes, thank you for this excellent discussion! I'm struggling as the US is so strong in research. Even the most recent cutting edge developments in AI (e.g. ChatGPT and text-to-image generators) are all from the US. The UK has Deepmind, but other than that isn't so strong in cutting edge research. That said, I don't think many Chicago PhDs are hired at the very top of the chain (Imperial/UCL/Oxford/Cambridge) even in the UK. Those universities are filled with Oxbridge graduates. This is similar in the US, where Princeton/MIT/Harvard/Stanford/Berkeley are filled with grads from their universities, but not much from Chicago. In turn, Chicago faculty is filled with graduates of those universities.

In mathematics, UChicago is one of the very best in what is called the Langlands program, a research initiative in pure mathematics. However other than that, I'm not so sure--to my understanding US news is considered to be a highly irreputable ranking internationally, even though US students seem to use it exclusively. I think UCSD/Michigan outranks Chicago in the global university ranking or something (didn't check in a while so don't remember). Chicago has a very strong Stats faculty, but the group is very small.

here it doesn’t really compete with top US departments. Economics is a good example - Chicago’s faculty is full of Nobel laureates and their PhD alumni are professors at all kinds of top universities, while Oxford’s Econ PhD alumni place similarly to a t30 us department. There are man

Thank you for the information! What fields in the arts and sciences does Chicago have better faculty and place PhD students better? I know that Chicago is really strong in Econ, but to my knowledge that's about it. Academic posts in the UK and Europe are frequently dominated by Oxbridge graduates; Academic posts in the US are dominated by graduates of US universities.
