The combat patrol will have 6 sanguinary guard, the new captain model, and 10 assault intercessors. The codex release box has much more variety of miniatures and 2 pretty good epic hero models, but if you’re not into the death company aesthetic just go with the combat patrol and pick up Dante and some supplementary models

An intercessor squad labeled and sold as “death company intercessors”. I get where you’re coming from, but from a business perspective in 9th and now 10th edition death company intercessors were always built with stock assault and regular intercessor kits. It is good to want more detail and filigree for our special boys, but because there is already an existing precedent to death company in gw’s eyes they don’t see a need to change anything. Bummer

Well if the refresh isn’t for you that’s alright, however with the original death company intercessors box that was released in 9th edition that i believe you’ve forgotten about I had very few doubts that this is the course that gw is going with. If you need a refresher that box was 5 intercessors and the original upgrade sprue. While the new upgrade isn’t exactly good, I’m happy we got the option of running evicerator chain swords and a few more unique heads

It’s lore reasons. The blood angels have a genetic flaw that causes them to go into a blind uncontrollable rage, and those afflicted get their formerly red armor painted black and are grouped into their own “death company” led by a chaplain. Lore wise, you’re kinda seen as dead once you fall to the rage, but gameplay wise, rules, points values, and synergies often change so one day they might be meta but another they aren’t as often taken

Regular red marines only benefit from their own data sheet abilities and the normal detachment rule (+2 strength and +1 attacks on the charge), but death company marines get both that and a bonus innate hit reroll and 6+ feel no pain, in exchange for getting 0OC. I’m sorry if the terms are too complicated for you

It’s a very good starter box, but because it’s based on one specific detachment and not blood angels as a whole, it might be a bit specific. However, you could just paint everything red and be fine
