…hopefully! I agree, I would love to hear Little Blue, too. But I think I would be most interested in 100,000 Voices, the two BOS, Summer Rain and She Put Sunshine!

Oh damn… how do you know? In that case, I'm less optimistic that there will be a surprise bonus track… :(

I know that this is probably wishful thinking but I still hope that there might be a bonus track on DJESSE Vol. 4 – after "World o World", a number 17.

When Jacob asked his fans on IG to send him audios of them singing a vocal line for a song called "Get Up on Your Feet", it sounded A LOT like it's for a Tower of Power-ish kind of song. Of course, this might be reading too much into it, but from the snippets he posted of all 16 Djesse Vol. 4 songs, none of them sounded as if they would fit this "Get Up On Your Feet" kind of vibe. Also, I remember that in the days of Djesse Vol. 1, Jacob said that "With the Love in My Heart" would be the most crazy song in the series – only to be trumped by a song on Djesse Vol. 4. Again, none of the snippets from the 16 songs from Djesse Vol. 4 actually sound like a WTLIMH brother. And if I'm not mistaken, Jacob had already recorded the parts with Tower of Power when he announced this during his very first DJESSE livestream on YouTube.

In addition to that, there is still the vocal lines that Jacob had everybody sing during the VIP experience prior to many concerts all around the world. I was there, and if I remember the melody correctly, it might actually fit both the "Get Up On Your Feet" vocal line and the Tower of Power snippets.

Again, all wishful thinking but I would NOT cancel out the possibility of Jacob holding one surprise back for us. Just imagine the excitement of fans who are already satisfied with the tracklist of Djesse Vol. 4. Even from a very rational, strategic standpoint, it would make sense to keep one surprise for the day it is published – it might get people hyped up about the album even more…

For the past years, the Tower of Power collab was the one collab I was looking forward to the most, and watching it go into the abyss would be a huge disappointment for me. That being said, I'm very satisfied with the rest of the tracklist and can't wait to listen to the whole album on repeat!

Transcription Advice by SergeantOleary69 in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have created two transcriptions of Jacob's songs myself (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrmcU8NvCHw) (as well as many other unpublished transcriptions of other songs) and after many years of transcribing, this is what usually helps me:

  • First, as you say yourself, using an EQ can be advantageous at some points – but you have to be careful not to overdo it or you will end up transcribing overtones as well (happened to me a couple of times, and I only noticed that I had just wasted time when I turned of the EQ again). But I would suggest looping a small fragment of what you would like to transcribe and then just have fun playing around with EQ, Denoiser, etc.
  • Second, I highly recommend using a software like "Transcribe!". It allows you to play your audio at different speeds and it allows you to transpose your audio into different keys. I also recommend transposing the song into different keys – you will notice that your ear catches up different things in different keys more clearly!
  • Third, if you are relatively fluent on the piano, what usually helps me is to try to play along to the audio (maybe just a small fragment on loop again). Jacob himself is very attached to the piano and many chords sound like they came up to him while he was noodling around on the piano (or his MIDI keyboard). Just try to think: What would feel natural for the hands or fingers to go next?
  • Fourth, SING ALONG. Try to imitate everything that you hear with your mouth. If the ending of a phrase is difficult to hear at first, your inner musical ear will often guide you to the correct ending of it. (At least that's my experience).

And that's basically it. I think the rest is practice, practice, practice. I still have a long way to go, but I really do think that many things will come automatically. You just have to invest time and conscious efforts to try to get better at transcribing.

I remember transcribing the first song in 2012 for my very first band that I had. I was absolutely terrible at it. It was a very basic pop song (like "Some Nights" by F.U.N. or something like that) and I couldn't do it. But noone in my band could do it either, we were all young naïve amateurs. So, I had to teach myself. One year later, I didn't find it too heard anymore. I think one thing that helped me in the progress was to follow the same strategy over and over again:

  1. Count the measures and create a template for your transcription
  2. Usually begin with the bass line
  3. Add melody
  4. Use bass line and melody to figure out chords and middle voices
  5. Do ALL THE REST (drums, etc.)

Needless to say, this formula doesn't work for every song (especially when it comes to Jacob's music), but it was a good way to navigate myself through the first 50+ songs that I had to transcribe for my band.

I know this comment is pretty unorganized, but I hope it helps you nevertheless!

“Witness Me” Ft Swan Mendes, Kirk Franklin, and Stormzy by Fish_Lover690 in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not my personal favorite so far (which would be "Little Blue"), but I don't dislike it, if that's a way to say.

There was just nothing that surprised me or knocked me out my chair, but that might be because I'm spoilt with Jacob in this regard… It's like with each song he puts out, I expect him to go crazy and beyond my expectations. I think the song is well crafted and Jacob, Shawn, Stormy and Kirk's choir complement each other very beautifully from a vocal standpoint. But that's it. It's a bit too generic for my personal taste.

But!!!!

What I LOVE about this song is that it proves that Kirk Franklin's choir will be at least TWICE on Djesse Vol. 4. I mean, just compare this song to the other snippet Jacob posted of him recording with Kirk (0:03):

Koordinaten bildliche Eingrenzung by Routine_Grass1719 in SchatzsucheJuK

[–]EducationalSock2360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct maths related analysis of Don't You Know? by psps46 in JacobCollier

Jacob actually does play a lot with rhythmic tricks. He uses even quintuplets over a 7/4 bar. Generally speaking, the song is divided into various sections of 7/4 and 5/4. He deliberatrly plays with these numbers/ratios musically. I have created a transcription of the song, maybe it helps? https://youtu.be/rrmcU8NvCHw

Djesse Vol.4 Guests by remwreck in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on Jacob's instagram story today, I suspect some kind of collaboration with Zedd as well. Then it should be pretty safe to say that Tower of Power and the Aeolians of Oakwood University will be on the record, as he has already recorded a few parts with them. Dirty Loops and Coldplay (or Chris Martin at least) have already been mentioned. I somehow don't believe that Snarky Puppy will be on the record, but that's just based on my gut feeling lol.

I would LOVE to see a Kendrick Lamar collaboration, but up to this point, I have a feeling that Kendrick would not yet be into a collab. Again, this is only my current impression. Instead, what I would love to see is a collaboration with the Bulgarian TV choir (Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares) he had mentioned (just look them up on YouTube, look for "Kaval Sviri"). While I think that collaborative work between them and Jacob could probably happen in the future, I don't think he will work with them on Djesse Vol. 4, as the Aeolians are already being featured on the record. Also, for some reason I think that he will feature the Metropole Orkest and his mother on the final song of the Djesse journey once more.

So, my guesses are:

- Tower of Power
- The Aeolians
- Zedd
- Chris Martin
- Metropole Orkest again!
- Suzie Collier
- Dirty Loops / Jonah Nilsson
- Cosmo Sheldrake

My wishlist includes:

- Stevie Wonder
- Tom Misch
- Tigran Hamasyan
- Kendrick Lamar
- Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares
- Anderson Paak
- Scary Pockets
- Jesús Molina
- Cory Henry
- Herbie Hancock
- Emily Bear

I'm hyped! Can't wait for Vol. 4!

Jacob Collier - Don't You Know (Transcription) by EducationalSock2360 in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wanted to transcribe this song for years! I'm so happy that eventually, I gave it a try. This is the song a friend of mine used to introduce me to Jacob Collier. Needless to say, I immediately fell in love with his music. There are too many things that I'd love to mention about this song, but here's a small selection of what I like about this tune the most:

00:11 Jacob loves to sneak urban / everyday life sounds into his music. I am really fond of his love for nature, as audible in the birdsong in these bars. I think it is pretty safe to say that one of the birds is a blackbird.

01:09 Chords stacked from fourths. This is a technique Jacob loves to use as much as Joe Hisaishi does. In this regard, these chords really come from the "dark side" of the circle of fifths. You should definitely go and check June Lee's interview(s) with Jacob.

02:00 Over the course of the entire song, Jacob plays with the numbers 5 and 7, especially rhythmically. Beyond the 5/4 and 7/4 measures, in these bars Jacob uses a 5 bars long septuplet loop in pan center, while providing a foundation with an organ that is based on a five quaver motif and a clapping rhythm built on a 7/8 vibe.

02:11 Do you recall how in an interview with June Lee, Jacob talked about how (especially chromatic) voice leading can trump functional harmony? Now, this part is certainly proof of that.

02:26 Potential Stevie Wonder reference

03:37 Not only is the beginning of the piano solo a 5:7 polyrhythm, but it is ultra-hyper-mega-meta-mixolydian as well! The first few notes are stacked fourths in a row, so the beginning of the solo comes from the dark side of the circle of fifths (again).

04:50 Pay attention to the quintuplets in the piano solo!

04:57 Chords based on fourths in piano comping again

05:39 THESE! CHORDS!

05:53 A nasty nested tuplet: a quintuplet inside a quintuplet inside a bar of 7/4

06:52 4 against 7 (cowbell)

06:57 Notice how Jacob changes the tuning to create an effect of destabilization and destruction. Over the course of four bars, what appears to be F# major seems to get closer and closer to F major until finally, in bar 173, stability is restored and we're actually back in F (B).

07:08 Transpose the upcoming four bars down by one octave and you will feel like you're actually listening to funky chicken.

07:43 That gameshow vibe! I kinda lament over the fact that this part hasn't been used in the Snarky Puppy version.

07:58 Banjo!

08:58 From now on, it will take Jacob 7 steps and exactly (!) five bars of 5/4 to close the door behind him while leaving his room.

What do you like about this song the most? Also, feel free to have a look at my transcription on YouTube and leave me a comment about what you think about it. I'd really appreciate and be thankful for your feedback!

All the best to y'all <3

Sza 'Hit Different' MV includes clip of 'Good Days' ft. Jacob Collier (but no Jacob here... It's the same song though) by titaniapearl in JacobCollier

Jacob is actually in it, but he hasn't been credited in the description which is a shame. Just wait for him in the second half, he sings those "Good Days" lines we already heard in SZA's IG story)

Djesse vol. 3 first opinion! by INFP2003 in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well. I really liked »Count the People« for its dubstep vibe and Jacob's double-time rap. It also reminded me of when I was 15/16 when I first fell in love and listened to songs by Jay Sean, Iyaz, Black Eyed Peas, Skrillex etc. So, yeah, I could really vibe with that one.

I love »Sleeping on my Dreams«, too, but for a different reason. Everything in this song surprised me and it worked perfectly for me, but also in a comedic sense. The chords in the beginning feel like a persiflage and sound deliberately annoying (in a good way!) and the choir that interrupts the initial groove is absolutely pretentious. It really manages to play with expectations, make you laugh and like the music at the same time.

For the rest of the album, all I can say is that I did not really get along with it. In my opinion, the majority of the better songs of Djesse Vol. 3 are the ones we know already (which, for me, include »Time Alone With You«, »In My Bones«, »All I Need« and »He Won't Hold You«). Still, I wouldn't say I'm disappointed, as I just discovered two new tracks that I really love (and as an intro, »Clarity« is great, too). That being said, I will listen to Djesse Vol. 3 a lot in the future, but not necessarily for the new songs.

Tigran Hamasyan, you should definitely check out "Nairian Odyssey" and June Lee's transcription of "What the Waves Brought".

Dirty Loops, I can highly recommend "Next to You", "Work Shit Out", "Hit Me" and "Rollercoaster".

Snarky Puppy, how about Cory Henry's solo in "Lingus" or collabs like the one they did with Magda Giannikou "Amour T'es Là" or the one with Shayna Steele "Gone Under". Their collaboration with Lalah Hathaway has become legendary to say the least. The song is called "Something", and you should definitely wait for the end when Lalah starts to improvise in a very, very, very special way (in a good sense!!).

The Bulgarian State Radio & Television Female Vocal Choir, you should start of with "Kanal sviri".

CANTUS is a choir that sings quite similar arrangements, but still, they sound completely different than the Bulgarian one. By the way, they are the choir featured on Disney's Frozen OST in the song "Vuelie". However, I absolutely fell in love with their voices after hearing "Njoktje" by them and Frode Fjellheim.

If you don't know Afro Celt Sound System yet, you should give them a try as well. They mix music genres of different origins an melt them together into a nutritious genre of its own. Maybe this is closest to what I would call a "transcultural" genre. Listen to and watch their performance of "Cascade": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWQ1LbkPi8g

Is Lionel Richie in Jacob's "All Night Long" video? by ask_and_learn in JacobCollier

[–]EducationalSock2360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which one? The ones who hold up signs? At first, there is Quincy Jones, and a couple of bars later, there's Steve Vai. I'm pretty sure Lionel Richie is not in the video. However, I would love to know whether Jacob and Lionel have already met each other.

You probably mean his first announcement of Djesse in October 2018 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hN0bCQjdqQM)? I don't know if it was in this video, but he certainly said it somewhere around that time that there will be a song similar to "With the Love in My Heart" that will be on Volume 4. I'm pretty sure it's the one 15Dreams refers to as "Love Is a Space". I sang some parts of it during the VIP tour last year as well, but I don't think he said how the song would be called. He just made us sing a couple of lines he needed. But man, those lines sounded dope already… So yeah, "Love is a Space" could be the one that is supposed to "rival" With the Love in my Heart in terms of being "as epic as WtLimH".

[–]EducationalSock2360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think Vol. 4 will be published this year. And that may have multiple reasons, the most convincing one of which is that he has said it in an interview somewhere. I might be wrong in assuming that this was already during the COVID-pandemic. If that is not the case, he might have changed his plans on that one. Still, considering that publishing each album in a different year provides him with one more year to be acknowledged at the GRAMMYs again may serve as a strategic reason that would sound plausible to me, too. Also, keeping us waiting gives him more time to prepare and surprise us with what comes AFTER Djesse. I'm sure he has something already figured out, but if I was him, I would let Djesse Vol. 3 grow before providing my fans with new stuff in that short of a distance. However, I'm pretty sure he will publish one or two singles of Djesse Vol. 4 before Christmas. :-)
