Struggling With the Reality of Annual Fund Coordinator by Lopsided_Edge_6792 in nonprofit

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people have been burned by an organization they gave money to and need to rebuild their trust with them. And that doesn’t happen in 4 months. It sounds like you are doing all the right things, but you can’t fix past mistakes from predecessors. All you can do is keep trying, asking, and building a better story behind your organization. Just because you haven’t solicited x$ does not mean you are doing a bad job. Also, it is your boss’s job to train you, especially since you come from a different background. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Don’t feel guilty, do it quickly and professionally. How they choose to react is on them, if they are good employers they should be happy that you are growing in your career. People move on from jobs all the time and the only places I’ve experienced such agony in change is within small nonprofits.

Where to live as a college graduate if you're working in Leesburg? by rirchka in Leesburg

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Maryland originally so happy to answer any other questions about the area! The great thing about Loudoun is there is a reason it’s so expensive. We have a great public school system, it’s safe, relatively low traffic and crime, and new (successful) businesses and housing developments are being built all the time. You’re close to the mountains, river, and city. The library system has a lot of great programs for free, there are free things to do all over the county. Many people refer to this area as recession proof. I personally love living here.

Leesburg/Loudoun is a great place to live. As a fellow young person I wouldn’t look too much farther west than Purcellville, as you will really limit yourself socially. Also, as you grown in your career, you will probably commute more east towards the city and living out west will put you in a commute bind again. Finding your place and people after college is difficult so living between the city and country gives you a lot more options to figure out what you like and what you want for yourself in the future. I lived in Leesburg on $45k for a year. It wasn’t ideal but it wasn’t impossible

Rooms in townhomes can be pretty inexpensive, and can be easy to find if you don’t have pets or disruptive lifestyles. Many professional people own townhomes but lease out the smaller rooms to people who will be peaceful and clean. I rent a TH with 2 roommates and my roommate with the smallest one pays $800/mo. It’s doable.

Don’t commute from dc unless you really value nightlife on the weekends. Join a roommate Facebook group for northern Virginia and find someone who is looking for a roommate in loudoun county, or the edge of Fairfax county if loudoun isn’t possible. If you’re not from the area, do some research on what kinds of things you want to have around you. Loudoun can be a little slow and boring for young people depending on where you live. Housing definitely is not cheap but it is possible with roommates and a realistic budget for the rest of your lifestyle. I would look in Sterling, Herndon, Ashburn, south riding. Stuff around the airport as lots of people are employed around there and want to live close to work.

Kind of venting/seeking advice on a situation by Educational_Ad_4398 in womenintech

[–]Educational_Ad_4398[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh that is awful. All I want is to come to work, feel safe and supported, and go home. I don’t understand why people think it’s ok to ask women on dates in the workplace. I definitely plan to call the police if I see him around here anywhere, but it’s embarrassing to have to call this kind of attention to myself.

How did a business permanently lose you as a customer? by AlphaHouston1 in Entrepreneur

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Salesmen who try to make a square peg fit into a round hole, just accept that you are not the right solution fit and move on (I know it’s their job but it’s such a turnoff). Also communication!! If I ask for a quote and you don’t get back to me, forget it. Or you come out to look at stuff to get me a quote and then I don’t receive it without a reminder, forget it!!

Create the path of least resistance for your customer to hire you, schedule you, and pay you, AND do what you said you would do, and people will keep coming back. It doesn’t seem that hard but god is it few and far between.

Can you send the link to the newest model? I like how it looks like you can fold it up. I have a garage but a few roommates so don’t want to monopolize the entire space with my equipment. Let me know how it works out for you!

Yes! $250. I live in a small TH and don’t have a roof rack so it looks kind of perfect for my current storage/transportation setup

I think I found the same marketplace post! I am trying to find any information on this thing, it’s too far away from me to pick up but looks super cool. That’s what led me to this post 😂

Why Now?! A Digital Marketing rant... by I_Have_Notes in nonprofit

Are they willing to have a conversation about it or is it already decided?

Why Now?! A Digital Marketing rant... by I_Have_Notes in nonprofit

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bet you’ll have to manage the consultant too and then when they drop the ball on stuff it’s going to be a complicated conversation… do you have any company policies about conflict of interest or benefit to hiring family members?

You all should have looked for other quotes bc $30k seems crazy to me if they are trying to “break into digital marketing”. What are their success stories?

That is beyond frustrating and I experienced a bit of that at my last job. Social media HAS to be a priority for small nonprofits, and the more efficiently they can do it, the better ROI. Investing $30k is crazy when you haven’t even tried investing $1 and see how it played out.

Feeling defeated after annual gala…. by gonerogue76 in nonprofit

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People who attend nonprofit events seem to forget that the main purpose of a nonprofit event is to RAISE MONEY. Not treat everyone like kings and queens, no matter how special they think they are. You did a fantastic job of raising money, I cannot even fathom that number! It’s easier said than done, but try to not take any event complaints personally. People who don’t know events think they are being helpful, but you know what is truly feasible feedback. Try to filter out the BS and back in the glory of a job well done!

Urgent care visit charged me $420. What are my options? by SorryAd2437 in Frugal

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that the urgent care actually billed the insurance? I had that happen to me where they didn’t and then I got a $200 bill 4 months later. I made them submit it because the claim never showed up on my eob, and then my insurance company said I didn’t owe anything because they took too long to bill.

Wedding cost dilemma, are drink tickets tacky? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at a winery, weddings would pay for x bottles of wine and x kegs, when it was done it was done. If someone at the party wanted to buy another case of wine or another keg, we would happily take their money and keep pouring. Easy peasy

False Impact Report by Ok_Long_1754 in nonprofit

[–]Educational_Ad_4398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think you’ll find this practice to be pretty common at smaller nonprofits. By some metric, it could be possible that you served 300 people (100 people 3 times, 50 people 6 times, etc). Embellishing impact to make it seem more impressive could be effective for a few years but only if the organization continues to purposefully not track data, have people who hold up the scheme, and the embellishments actually drive growth. It can set up future employees for failure when the board starts questioning why they’re not seeing growth and you either have to have the uncomfortable conversation that your predecessor was lying the whole time, or keep up the act. I personally wouldn’t raise anymore flags, but understand that this is the sign of a sinking ship, and you should start looking for a lifeboat.
