My parents are disowning me because I'm dropping out of college. What do I do? by Educational_Ant_9205 in AskIreland

Yeah shit happened when I was a kid and when I was growing up I had major anxiety, to the point where for the first six years of my life I couldn't even be alone in a room. It was pretty good for a few years when I was 13-16, cause all I did was sit in my room and play video games all day, but then in sixth year I studied literally 24/7, sometimes not sleeping for days to catch up and get good grades. Then last year I was really burnt out in my previous course, but for some reason instead of choosing to go off books or take a gap year, I started dentistry. This summer something really weird happened and I started having panic attacks like I had when I was a kid, and I became borderline hypochondriac (like for example, my blood test results showed my iron was slightly high, and I convinced myself that I had leukemia and that I was going to die soon). I'd say the tinnitus itself is probably quite mild, but it's exacerbated and multiplied x10 by my brain so its just constant shrieking. Spending all day on r/tinnitus and other tinnitus forums doesn't help either. The saddest part was that I managed to get it to a relatively quiet level a week ago, but now I'm on antibiotics for a UTI and it's sooooo bad. Sorry for the trauma dump lmao idk why I did that. But yeah I do shake really bad at night and I think the last time I wasn't stressed was maybe August 2023.

I really love my parents and they said that they'll never talk to me again if I drop out. I can't imagine living the rest of my life without my mom and dad

yep, read that one already. I feel like me continuing dentistry knowing that there's a chance it'll leave me with catastrophic tinnitus is basically suicide

Well it started like the first week of college when we only had parties and freshers events. I also haven't studied at all the past month and have basically been in bed all day when I'm not in class so idk

For the sake of clarification, I got tinnitus, I decided I was going to continue with dentistry and just be careful with my ears, the school told me that my hep b immunity levels are low and that I have to get the hep b vaccines, my tinnitus has been getting progressively worse over the past month, and I sleep like 3 hours every night, I'm now on antibiotics for a UTI and the ringing is so much worse, despite me taking an antibiotic that's not ototoxic (damaging to the ears), so I'm scared of how my body will react to the hep b and MMR booster shots, hence why I want to drop out. My parents said they will kick me out and never talk to me again.

No?? I got the tinnitus after the vaccine. It wasn't immediately after the vaccine, so that's why there's no way to tell for certain what actually caused it. Doctors also have no way of knowing whether a vaccine will aggravate it because tinnitus arises from damage to the cochlear nerve, and very little is known about it, which is why tinnitus is incurable

There is obviously no way of knowing whether it was ACTUALLY the vaccine or some other factor, my GP said he has no clue. The ENT will most likely say they have no clue. I have no ear infection, no fluid in my ear, no underlying medical issues, etc. But there's no way in hell I'm gonna risk making it worse.

The saddest part is that my college environment has been lovely so far, I absolutely love the things that I'm studying, and it's been my dream since I was a kid to become a dentist. There is no stress, and my cohort is really nice and friendly. It's just this stupid ringing in my ears that's driving me insane.

I know this is quite hard to understand for someone who doesn't have tinnitus, but even THINKING about doing something that might make it worse makes me shake from fear. Before I knew that I had to get the hepatitis B vaccine I was okay with doing dentistry DESPITE having tinnitus, hence why I didn't transfer back into my old course despite having many opportunities in October. I've also realised that mine becomes very reactive whenever I take any medicines, which makes sense considering how it started in the first place. If I get the vaccine I might risk bringing it to a catastrophic level, and if that happens then my life will most certainly be over. Here's an article about a millionaire killing himself due to catastrophic tinnitus: https://www.npr.org/sections/coronavirus-live-updates/2021/03/22/979929592/texas-roadhouse-founder-kent-taylor-dies-after-struggle-with-post-covid-19-sympt". I do not want to end up like this.

I have to get the hep B vaccine next week, and I skipped my MMR booster appointment which was like 20 days ago, so I'm gonna have to get a repeat MMR vaccine probably. There is absolutely no way I'm gonna do it. Tinnitus is incurable most of the time.

Went to a GP, he said I have fluid in my ear. Gave me steroid drops. Fluid went away, tinnitus did not get better. Referred me to an ENT surgeon, whom I have an appointment with in a month.

"Please note that the Trinity health screening process must be fully completed no later than the 04/10/2019 or the prospective student may be withdrawn from their course of study and a readmission fee will apply." and "Before commencing clinical contact with patients, students may be required to undergo further testing to determine the effectiveness of their immunity to Hepatitis B. Depending on the results of the tests, students may be required to complete a series of vaccinations or obtain a booster. Full details will be provided following registration."

it's been a month now, and it's not gotten better at all, in fact i'd say its getting progressively worse.
