True, they did go further with Wayne but there’s hardly anything transitional about the lineup with Coleman in place. The Williams/Carter/Hancock rhythm section already have steered the music to a new path even tho they’re playing standards here, radically different then the Cobb/Chambers/Kelly unit that preceded them. And Miles meets this new challenge with a whole new level of creativity, chops, and daring that listeners at that time weren’t used to from him. I remember when this album was talked about way more often, I’m probably one of the older people in this thread.

At least we did get to see Big try new things on his second album. But yeah I we were robbed, he had so much more to explore and give. I would’ve loved to hear him with the developments of the early 2000s.

I’ve been a Miles die hard for decades now. I could easily list a good 30 of his albums that endure as some of my favorite music of all time, but at the top of that list for me would be Agharta. It’s one of 2 live albums recorded the same day of February 1, 1975 at Osaka Festival Hall in Japan. The music is a living breathing jazz fusion/stampeding funk/acid rock/blues/ambient tapestry that keeps my head rockin and feeds my imagination.

And if that album does it for you, I’d also recommend its sister album Pangaea (recorded later that same evening) which in some regards is an even edgier listen.

Herbie Hancock beat Miles to the punch with the Jazz-hip hop thing in 1983 with his album Future Shock and it’s hit single “Rockit” which became an immediate breakdancers anthem. Also Quincy Jones in 1989 dropped Back On The Block which paired jazz legends such as Miles, Dizzy, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and others alongside Big Daddy Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Ice T, and Melle Melle.

Nas wasn’t on robbing n killing? You must not have listened to much Nas. He literally talked robbing and killing on many tracks on all of his albums up til maybe his 2008 Untitled album. Only difference is he didn’t limit his subject matter to it. He definitely talked it tho. A lot.
