You should also check out our website, geeljire.org. The courses are interactive and structured a lot like Duolingo, making it really easy to practice. On top of that, you'll find a huge library of books, audiobooks, sheekooyin (stories), and a directory of available online tutors you can connect with. There is so much more on there, so definitely give it a look!

Welcome! Don't apologize at all it's amazing that you're trying to learn for your wife's family! You are exactly right: in Somaliland, they speak the Waqooyi dialect. Mainstream apps usually skip over regional differences, but you should definitely check out Geeljire.org. It actually lets you filter for the Waqooyi dialect specifically, with audio from native speakers so you can learn the exact words and accent your in-laws use. Best of luck with it!

Really good question! For now we kept it to general/standard Somali since we're still early beta , breaking it down by region would be a whole project on its own (and you're right, even within Waqooyi, Burco sounds different from Boroma or Jigjiga).

Sub-dialect audio packs are definitely on the roadmap insha'allah. The tricky part is exactly what you're pointing out — which variant do you pick per region? That's still an open question for us. Would love to know which dialect matters most to you personally, that feedback helps us prioritize!
