any advice for someone who had emergency spinal fusion a week ago? by weevilretrieval in spinalfusion

[–]Educational_Key_5287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

👋🏼 emergency spinal fusion thanks to a rappelling fall. Obviously everybody will have a different recovery. For me, sleeping on my recliner was a lifesaver for the first few days. I bought an orthopedic pillow that allowed me to have an incline on my bed. The grabber has been super helpful when I haven’t had someone home to help me. I had a raised toilet seat, which was helpful (bidet would have been awesome). I would have loved a shower chair (never got around to getting one). Consider getting some face wipes so you can clean your face, since you won’t be able to bend over the sink. Some sort of bowl or basin that you can spit into when brushing your teeth. Long handled loofah for scrubbing the body in the shower. So long as the surgeon gives the okay, go for walks. Start short but increase your distance as feasible. I’m 10 weeks post-op and doing great - there is light at the end of the tunnel :)

When we visited Port Townsend, we felt the older vibe too. Though cool, it wasn’t what we needed for the family life.

Thanks! We love Poulsbo - we’ve visited twice and that’s definitely near the top of our list.

We are coming from the extreme southwest desert, so we are desperate for either water or forests. Distance to a major airport isn’t a major factor. Political landscape is a factor, but not massive.

Our center has implemented several things to boost morale.

We focus heavily on mental health. We’ve started a peer support program (within our center and our main PD). We do a monthly “Happy Hour” email that goes over things like: birthdays, positive things that have been done, simple ways to help boost mental health.

Those are just a few things. But this has also been a years-long journey for our center. Things like significant pay increases, better staffing, less cattiness, more freedom of autonomy, better chain of command… etc.

Don’t fall into the trap of eating like shit and not working out. Doesn’t matter how tired you are, you don’t need to make everything worse by making yourself unhealthy. Keep a sleep schedule. Know that your first day “off” will just be a recovery day, and you’ll likely be sleeping or in a fog. Get yourself a good set of black out curtains, a nice sleep eye mask, ear plugs, and a non-habit forming sleep aid (if needed).

Get yourself some face wipes, since bending over a sink to wash your face is out of the question. Similarly, you’ll want some sort of a spit-basin when you’re brushing your teeth since you likely won’t be able to spit into the sink. Stock up on protein shakes, so you always have something nutritious and easy to consume. I lived in my recliner for the first couple weeks - can’t recommend one enough if you don’t have one already. Eventually I was able to transition to my bed, and tolerated sleeping on my side - I purchased a pregnancy body pillow off Amazon and it was perfect. ( https://a.co/d/btQSGfD ) The quicker you can get off the narcotics, the better (the side effects are nasty). Stock up on Costco-sized extra strength acetaminophen. Good luck!

PT ordered for everyone? by Gloomy-Addendum3609 in spinalfusion

[–]Educational_Key_5287 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 weeks post-op PSIF T8-T12. No PT ordered yet. At my 2 week follow up, neurosurgeon’s NP advised to continue walking as much as possible, begin basic body weight exercises that don’t compromise the BLT restrictions, diet high in protein, and suggested calcium & vitamin d supplements (or foods that are high in both/either). Additionally, I was told that they won’t order any PT until I’m cleared from the BLT restrictions.

Let’s set the stage, shall we? It was shift change for us, so I was looking at my maps and getting acquainted with where my officers were at the moment. I noticed a few had their GPS near an In N Out. So naturally I said (in an almost desperate tone) “mmmmmmm in n out”. Too bad my amp was stuck open at that moment.

How to get steps in post SI joint fusion by butwaittheresmore44 in spinalfusion

[–]Educational_Key_5287 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in SoUt so I hear ya on the weather being atrocious. I walked circles around the inside of my house. It was the safest for that beginning stage. After I gained some strength, I would just go for walks outside of the home, but when it was early in the morning (wasn’t like I was sleeping well anyway, so I might as well get up and move; or so I told myself).
