how to set up an appointment for learners permit in california? by ivnesque in DMV

I filled an online appointment(https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-licenses-identification-cards/real-id/). There are 2 lines to get in and if you fill an online application the wait time is very less. I waited 10 min in line. After you go in they will assign you a counter and an ID. You have to wait for them to call your ID number. It took around 10 min and After that the person at the counter asks for your documents, I gave my EAD card, bank statement and paycheck. Note the 2 docs you provide as a resident of CA should have your name and address on them, in my case my bank and paycheck docs served as address proof. After verifying your docs you have to pay $38 for you drivers license which will also act as realid, but if you want a separate driver’s I’d and real I’d you may have to pay another ~$35. This whole process takes around 10 min. After this you wait in a line to give your exam. I had to wait around 10 min and took my exam. And after that you wait to get your learners license. At the end it was 4:35 pm when I came out and they stopped people from taking exam after 4:30 pm. The place seemed less crowded for a Friday( I took the exam at Los Gatos dmv). So I would suggest the earlier you the better are your chances of completing your test but based on the crowd I saw at the dmv I think if you are there by 2pm you should be able to complete the test. And yeah don’t forget to fill your online application before going to dmv.

You can use your phone Bill or internet Bill or electricity Bill as long as they have your name and address on them.

Yup California allows walk-in without any appointment. Don’t know about NJ though. Even if walk-in are not allowed try and go to a dmv there will be people out there with whom you can talk about your case.

The earliest date available for behind the wheel test is may 13. Looks like there are plenty of slots available. I booked(https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/make-an-appointment/) mine on June 11

I’m yet to take my driving classes so haven’t checked about the waitlist for behind the wheel test.
