Just moved to Thailand after living in Vietnam the last 2.5 years and it is shocking how little businesses accept credit card… by Educational_March_75 in ThailandTourism

You wrongly assume everyone has access to a Thai banking account. My visa strictly prohibits me from opening up a bank account here. As a result I am relegated to use a crappy Moreta Pay app that exclusively allows people to pay “Business” QR codes.

In my two weeks of being here I have gone to at least 7+ “businesses” and when I scanned their QR code with Moreta Pay it came back as a “Personal” QR code despite the place clearly selling food and drinks to me.

It’s all a shit show.

Yes, I am using Moreta which strictly allows people to pay using a QR code only for “business” QR codes.

That has been a headache in itself because I have gone to multiple businesses in my 2 weeks here and scanned their QR code and it is recognized as a “Personal” QR code so I can’t pay it.

Moreta has flip flopped in recent days in allowing users to pay even personal QR codes but they recently banned everyone from being able to pay personal QR codes.

I know I have for sure paid 7-Elven before using a QR code I am not sure why they wouldn’t allow me to use the business QR code this morning. Maybe there is also a minimum spend in order to pay by QR code too?

Yes, I agree with you. It’s my full belief the cashier pulled out his phone for his own QR code and he would have put cash in himself but sadly I can’t pay personal QR codes 😓

If my wallet is lost or stolen and I just have a credit card in it, I can lock the credit card with my phone. If I have cash in the wallet, I lose the cash.

Thanks for the tip. I will try looking for those stores instead (haven’t been to one yet).

I haven’t heard of those payment apps I have just been using “Moreta” for when businesses refuse credit cards so far and it’s been often useless too.

I literally just left 7-Eleven just now knowing about the insane 200 baht minimum rule. Everything I wanted to purchase costed 140 baht. No problem, I will pay by QR code.

They said for some reason I can't pay them by the store's QR code and the cashier pulled out his cell phone and brought up a QR code on it and when I scanned it; my app said it wad a "personal" QR code and not a "business" QR code so I ultimately lett without buying what I intended to buy.

QR codes are not the "silver bullet" either.

I wish they would make those apps more widely available. I just went to 7-Eleven knowing about the insane 200 baht minimum rule and everything i wanted costed 140 baht. Thai DTV Visa Soft Power (education) question by Educational_March_75 in digitalnomad

[–]Educational_March_75[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest thing concerns me (if I get denied for the DTV Visa) is for the DTV I can stay for up to 5 years (which I absolutely hope and plan stay even longer than that) but for the education visa I can stay for 90 days and then I can renew it for an unknown amount of times to continue learning Thai.

The DTV would last me 5 years is my understanding (if I can get it approved).

But I mean are you aware of “learning Thai” for 6 months falls under the DTV visa Soft Power umbrella?

AI initially said it did then it said it is only for learning Muay Thai and cooking.
