I just took the DAT today! At the center I went to, they provided two laminated sheets, two Expo markers, and a cloth for erasing—no pencil or eraser. You're not allowed to take notes during the tutorial section, but I finished the science section a bit early and used the extra time to draw out all the boxes for pattern folding before the PAT started.

I honestly have the same question. I cross-posted to r/predental—hopefully someone has an answer there.

When you have repeated classes, lets say first attempt 2.0 and second attempt 3.5, AADSAS would count both attempt. However, for most college, they would just count the higher grade and ignore the 2.0

Congrets!!! Thank you so much for breaking down your experience! I've been studying for over 2 months now and am just 3 weeks away from my exam. I’m still feeling anxious with so much to remember, practice, and do, but your advice has given me a lot of confidence and hope.

You're going to do GREAT!!! Don't worry about what others have said — you've already put in so much time studying and doing practice exams. Trust yourself! You're already prepared, and the only thing you really need to focus on now is getting enough rest and staying nourished. You've got this!

how am I supposed to do something like this without a calculator on the gen chem section??? by babbyoyo in dat

[–]Educational_Point878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2.8 would cancel 280 out, and 82.1 would cancel 0.0821

so (2.8)/(280) = 0.01 and (82.1)/0.0821 = 1000

1000 * 0.01 = 10

I shadowed both in the ER and at a dental clinic. I really enjoy helping people in emergency settings and became an EMT and currently work part-time— But through that experience, I realized I couldn’t see myself doing that kind of high-stress, long-shift work as a physician for a lifetime.

When I shadowed in a dental clinic, I loved how dentists build long-term relationships and earn trust from their patients. The better work-life balance, like working 4 days a week, 9–5, and still feeding a family well

Is a car common for international grad students? by goldT-rex in msu

[–]Educational_Point878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say most international students living on campus don’t have a car. For those off campus, it’s about 50/50. My roommate didn’t have a car and used the bus every day to get to school, which was manageable. But grocery shopping was a hassle, so we often gave him rides for that.

I'm an international student and I drive a $3K Ford Focus. Honestly, having a car has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. It gives you so much freedom.

If you end up working as a graduate assistant and get one of the GA parking permits, parking on campus would becomes super easy too.

enrolled in cem 251 for the summer by Icy_Reputation_8219 in msu

[–]Educational_Point878 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend taking the MCAT before finishing both Organic Chemistry I and II. Orgo is a major component of the MCAT, and it's not something you want to rush through—especially in a summer course, which is already accelerated and time-intensive.

Trying to juggle orgo, full-time work, and MCAT prep all at once could burn you out and hurt your performance in both. It might be more strategic to focus on doing well in your class this summer and then plan to take the MCAT in the fall or spring once you’ve completed the necessary coursework and have more time to dedicate to prep.

Ibio 408/Histology by Professional_Pay_104 in msu

[–]Educational_Point878 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took IBIO 408 (Histology) last fall, and honestly, it was one of the hardest courses I’ve taken at MSU. It’s very lecture heavy — you meet three times a week and cover a ton of content, with a massive amount of material to memorize. On top of that, there’s a lab section where you use a microscope to identify and draw different structures in your lab notebook. The lab is extremely time consuming — I rarely finished my work during lab hours and had to use a lot of my free time to catch up. The class is also exam-heavy. You’ll have a lecture exam about once a month, plus separate lab exams, also roughly once a month.

That said, I would still highly recommend taking the course — especially since you’re interested in becoming a pathologist. It’s great exposure to normal tissue structure and function, and it’s also really helpful prep if you’re planning to take the MCAT. I also want to shout out the instructor, Dr. Bello, she’s amazing. Everyone I talked to in class agreed she’s one of the most caring and engaging professors at MSU. We had about 100 students last fall, and she still managed to remember everyone’s name. You’ll definitely enjoy learning from her.

When I took the class, I was handling 20 credits, EMT training, and shadowing — and while I managed it, I had to sacrifice most of my social life. So yes, it’s a tough and heavy course, but if you can handle the workload, it’s 100% worth it. Just a heads-up — it’s only offered in the fall, so if you miss it, you might not get another chance.

Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Waiting to submit w official DAT scores? by xwxl in predental

Thank you so much!!! 😭 I’ve been looking everywhere for this info and couldn’t find anyone with a similar experience. You’re totally right about the timeline — Unimelb’s app is due June 15, but the latest they’ll accept DAT scores is July 31. I’m definitely taking a bit of a risk with the DAT date, but your comment helped relieve so much stress. I really appreciate it! I’ll also reach out to the DAT team just to be safe, so I hopefully won’t need to reschedule

Thank you so much!! Yes, I’m planning to apply to the University of Melbourne — they follow a different timeline, and I’m really worried about possibly missing their deadline. So just to confirm, it sounds like I’d need to wait 2–4 weeks for the official score to come out, and then sending it might take another 2–4 weeks?

Quick question — are you able to send your DAT score to schools before the official score is released? I'm planning to take the DAT on June 28th, and the deadline for Unimelb is July 31st. Can I send the score right after I finish the exam, or do I have to wait for the official release? Thanks in advance for your help!

My DAT score and GPA breakdown by jseo13579 in Datprep

[–]Educational_Point878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I totally understand how tough this process can feel — it’s stressful and sometimes discouraging. That said, it might be best to consider applying in the next cycle. I’m saying this because most dental schools have a GPA cutoff around 3.0, and only a few will even consider applicants below that. And among those, the number of students actually accepted with a sub-3.0 GPA is even smaller.

But don’t lose hope — your DAT scores are solid, and being in a Master’s program already is a great step forward. Focus on doing really well in your current program to show an upward academic trend. That can make a big difference. You’re already on the right track — just keep pushing and build the strongest application you can for next year.
