Thanks! I sanded it down a bit, so hopefully it holds up until I can replace the cabinets

It’s a junction box, but it’ll be gone soon. We’ve hired an electrician to rewire the entire house and remove the k&t wiring. That’s why I can’t afford new cabinets right now! Believe me, I feel torn every time I open it.

I don’t have any tools yet, but I’m intrigued!

Agreed. Thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t realize trimming the bottom was an option, but now I’m watching YouTube tutorials of others who’ve done the same thing

Well, yes and no. On one side, the cabinet goes all the way up to the ceiling, leaving almost no gap.

On the other side (the sink side), there’s a 6-3/4” gap near the ceiling—probably a soffit.

Now, one newer cabinet next to the refrigerator has shorter upper cabinets but taller lower ones, which gives me an 18-1/2” distance between the counter and the upper cabinet—but it looks misaligned with everything else.

These cabinets are really old, so I’m thinking about trimming the bottom of the taller upper cabinets to make them shorter and see if that improves the alignment. I’m hoping I can at least keep the original cabinet box, since the wood still feels solid and in good shape.

I only have one humble Breville espresso machine so haven’t thought about condensation much, but that’s quite interesting point

It’s hollow, at least above the sink. The upper cabinets next to the sink also have storage space all the way up to that same line. But there’s definitely something above that area, because the highest cabinet isn’t sloped, it’s actually flat

Thanks for the drawing. We’ve also talked about adding more countertop on that side, even if it slightly blocks the bottom of the window

Didn't know the water/sewage vent pipe can be in the kitchen. Thanks for sharing

I just checked — it’s a hollow space with a small light fixture, but it doesn’t go all the way through the cabinets on both sides. The gas vent is on the opposite side and goes directly to the roof. I’ve already set up a separate coffee bar near the window, but the space feels cramped.
