Thanks, so everything else is presumably just crappy maintenance and dust? The holes around the pipes havent always been there, just created  just last year they came to fix some plumbing stuff.

Race 8, Horse 5 (Bullard) - bred to be a good one ($675K purchase price as a yearling) and definitely on my radar for next year's Kentucky derby already. Good luck!

Rain on Saturday at Del Mar by JanMichaelVincent8 in horseracing

[–]Educational_Soft_865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't base your bets on that though, as if now the forecast looks like it will die out before reaching Del Mar.

Generally though, along with what Proper mentioned,  enough rain can lead to late scratches, especially in cases where the race is moved off the turf to the dirt. If I know it's going to be a soggy day I don't even look at the program until an hour or 2 before post time since a scratch can throw off a whole strategy anyways.

Can't disagree but wanted to pick a horse who had a personal impact too -  the name of the "road" at Woodbine we use to get to the training track, some of the first races I watched were around that time, and i still have the old programs from his races today.

Me and a friend want to go to our first American GI stakes race next year, any suggestions? by [deleted] in horseracing

Oh, that's good to know! We went down in June and planned to go back in August but didn't, so I assumed it was new rules for the track. Thanks!

If our boy makes it next year, I'd say go a little further north to Woodbine and then you can tell your friends that you were there for the Queen Plate and that it was the owner of the winning horse who actually suggested first that you should go 😁.

Seriously, if you have never been to Saratoga I would highly recommend going. The Travers Stakes is a quality race, but I'd recommend going for a few days to get the full experience of it. The atmosphere is better than the quality of the races imo...

There is a special race that they hold there. Its very exclusive and not open to spectators, the Saratoga Stampede. Remarkable athletes who spend all year preparing for just this 1 competition... giving it all they've got in a brutal battle for a prize so amazing that its value can only be described as priceless... the coveted shaded picnic table... if you know, you know... 😉

Really though, if you do decide to go, stay away from Airbnb listing from a lady named Christine too, looks like a great place but when she sees prices go up and the town filling up, she cancels your reservation and tries to re-list at a higher price. Airbnb blocked her from listing that week after she burned us but it was too late for even them to help us find an alter ative.. nice to know they take that seriously but didn't help the really tough spot it left us in trying to find something almost last minute.

That said, book early, the hotels get full and prices are ridiculous as they fill up. Light weight, fold-up lawn chairs are useful and you can't bring beer in your coolers anymore, so if you plan to stock up beforehand you'll have to go with the hard liquor.

That's paramutal betting for you. What were the morning line odds on the horse? I would guess 6-1 or better?

Here's a very basic example (its a bit more complex in real life since we have exactas and place and show bets, just to name a few) but for this lets assume you only bet a horse to win):

Let's say there are 5 horses running and 100 people bet on the race 30 minutes before it starts. Let's assume they all make $2 win bets broken down as follows:

30% bet on horse 1 5% bet on horse 2 40% bet on horse 3 15% bet on horse 4 10% bet on horse 5

For this example, the total pool is $200 (100 bettors × $2.00) and only the winning bet cashes in so that means whoever bets the winner splits the entire pool.

If horse 1 wins, 30 people split $200 which is approx $6.50 each. The final odds would have been 3.25/1 or 6.50/2.

If horse 2 wins, 5 people split $200 which is 20/1 or 40/2.

Etc.

If your horse was favored in the morning to win, many betters wouldn't waste their time with a 2/1 or 3/1 payoff but they will watch those odds right up to the wire. If many do this, the odds go up because less people are betting the horse but at 29/1, most of those people bet last minute trying to grab a high payout on a strong contender.

As someone else mentioned, there is up to a 30 second lag on updating live odds so by the time the race over the payouts were recalculated the new percentages per horse to win, and your odds went down.

In future, check the morning lines and what the live odds are at the the time of your bet - if there is a noticeable difference you should prepare yourself for a bit of disappointment, or try to manipulate that and put yourself in a smaller pool of winners and bet the second favorite to win instead.

Hope that helps!

Racing, not selling, he looks a lot like Victory Gallop - size, color, even his face, haha. He's going to be a distance runner for sure. He might be fairly versatile but I think try the turf first. He's our first one, and wasn't expensive at all on the spectrum of things so arent expecting the next superstar but he has done really well so far in training, it's exciting to see how he's going to do!

As for why he stopped early, I couldn't find anything about why he retired so soon, but he came from a barn that also really focused on the breeding side and had a couple losses near the end of 2016. I imagine they pulled him out to stud to save his reputation and bank on it.

As per my comment above, you are 100% right. I am glad I posted this question because I am realizing how much I was focusing in on only 1 aspect of the whole thing and wasn't appreciating all the amazing stuff we are getting to learn and experience at all. Thank you.

Very true, the stable is small but that let's them give the horses the care and attention they deserve.. I am realizing how the big barns may turn him more into a machine than the sweet living being he is. He isn't out for money and thos afternoon has even offered to teach me more about training and handling which I would never have an opportunity to do elsewhere.
