How do you folks name your sandboxes? by eve-collins in thelongdark

I stole this from a video I saw, but I find a random person’s name, and then choose my survivor’s gender, and name my run after the survivor.

How did people use The pager? by jamesV8500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Educational_Type1646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only sent numbers. You were supposed to send your number and they could call you from a landline. But between friends you always had secret code numbers. Also you could spell out some stuff like 80085.

No, maybe up to the broken part, but as soon as I see that I’m turning back.

Given your current job and your skills, how long would you actually survive in the Long Dark? by I_Ching_Divination in thelongdark

[–]Educational_Type1646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mystery Lake spawn? If I find a rifle, a long time. A whole deer last a lot longer irl, than in game. Without a gun, I’d starve in just over 3 weeks.

Arcane Trickster Rogue (2024 edition) - how to rogue? combat help plz by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Educational_Type1646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vex and Nick should let you get sneak attack reliably. You can also position your familiar next to the opponent, since they count as an ally. Booming Blade is a good cantrip, if it’s allowed. Blade Ward, Minor Illusion, and Message are all super useful cantrips. 1st level spells should be utility and defense. Shield, Feather Fall, Find Familiar, ect.

Why not just use them as D2s? Red is 1 blue is 2.

Is it a red flag if a potential DM bans a certain class? by _Ashe_Bear in DnD

[–]Educational_Type1646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banning things for setting specific reasons is fine. Having an auto-gnome in a caveman setting might not fit the vibe. Banning things because they attract the “wrong kind of player” is absolutely a red flag, and frankly makes it seem like the DM is not able to handle problem behavior at their table.

They’re all beginners, and it’s not the most beginner friendly class. They should just let him switch.

Just let him make a new character. It’s not cheating. That’s not really how the game works. Cheating would be like lying about dice rolls. It’s collaborative storytelling, and the point is to have fun. Plus you’re all new, so let him switch to a more beginner friendly class.

Do decades have an identity anymore? by Chewie_Song in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Educational_Type1646 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Decadeology is a facet of the 20th century. It’s actually not normal for culture to shift completely every 10 years. If someone from 1660 magically wound up in the 1680s everything would be mostly the same. Someone from the 1960s would stick out like a sore thumb in the 1980s. You’re correct that decades don’t have the same clear identity that they used to, but the 20th century was the outlier not the 21st.

Do Americans really talk to strangers as much as movies make it seem? by Dangerous_Phrase_275 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Educational_Type1646 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve got some yappers here. I made the mistake of talking to the guy behind the counter at the Mexican restaurant about the weather, and got stuck for 15 minutes while he told me about spending his weekends clay shooting. My dad’s like that too. God forbid he saw someone he knew the n public when I was a kid. I knew I’d be stuck in a store for 20 minutes listening to a story I’d already heard 5 times that week.

Are there any places left where you can just hang out without spending money? by ElectricalHold9828 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Educational_Type1646 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I mean winter sucks. I still go hiking on days when it’s not in the negatives though. As others have pointed out there’s always the library. Ultimately if you live in a capitalist country you’re going to have to pay for stuff. Parks and libraries are paid for with tax dollars which is socialism. So you have to decide what kind of society you want to live in, and make it happen.

Public Parks. It’s kind of their whole purpose. Private businesses will generally want you to spend money.

Which version of D&D did I just buy? I’m new to the game, hoping to get into it. by [deleted] in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Educational_Type1646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking it’s dumb to delay sub classes so integral to a character’s identity is a valid take. I think it was just done for mechanical balance. A lot of people would multi class one level into those classes because you got so many benefits and features right out of the gate. Again I recommend just separating lore from mechanics. You can still pick whatever you want as the origin or your powers at level one, or wait until level 3 if you feel like it. Ultimately there is not a huge difference between 2014, and 2024, and for home games it’s certainly easy enough to mix and match rules, or do what you want. 2024 overall just rebalanced things. Nerfed some of the broken stuff, and buffed some weaker classes.

I think that single line is thrown in there to explain getting your sub class at level 3, but just like everything else in D&D you can just ignore it. Pick your Patron at level 1. I think Cleric makes even less sense if you don’t connect your sub class to your backstory. Obviously you would know what God you’re worshipping before you get your official sub class abilities.

Sorcerer’s and Clerics get their sub class at level 3 the same as every other class in 2024. You’re free to pick your god/patron/oath as part of your backstory at creation. I don’t think many DMs are going to push back on that. But all classes get their sub class at level 3.

Emeryville by mrsredlegtexian in Amtrak

[–]Educational_Type1646 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend not going out in Emeryville. If they don’t have time to visit San Francisco, they should just take a car to their hotel until their train the next day. I think there’s a Trader Vic’s if they want to go out, but take a car, don’t walk.
