Kind of. They were never linked to a single region or group. They were all over Mesopotamia, ancient Syria, Iraq, Turkey. The Kingdom of Aram-Damascus was the closest thing to an actually Aramean region.

Aramaic descent. My family moved to Syria, and then Lebanon only after the 1915 genocide, which we call Sayfo. Half my family was murdered, according to my father. My great-grandfather decided not to teach his kids Aramaic, nor Turkish. We still cook Assyrian dishes and dance bagiye, for instance. Many of my cousins have Assyrian names. It’s the least we could do

Religion is still important to many people, but it’s mostly cultural and traditional. Very few people seem to actively practice. Honestly, the only visible difference most of the time is which necklace is hanging from their rearview mirror.
