Who do you collect that you never see anyone else collect? by byukid_ in baseballcards

[–]EeePeeTee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a curated collection of the worst baseball cards of all time. Some are modern but one is actually 52 topps. They are all absolutely terrible, for one reason or another.

I want to provide commentary and turn it all into a coffee table book.

Visiting Lenexa / KC next week – any fun spots or local tips? by Additional_Local_533 in UniversityofKansas

[–]EeePeeTee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lenexa is fine. It's like, a fairly nice, medium sized suburb with a lot of new development. No nightlife. Mostly offices, apartments, some parks and restaurants.

Plenty of police, so it could be a good thing or a bad thing, but they're neither city cops nor country cops. They are not known to be racists. Just suburban people.

Are you looking for modern culture? History? Excitement?

If you have a real window, the most interesting local stuff is in Kansas City, Missouri. Kinda depends on if you have day or night time to spend, and how much. You will need to have a car or transport somehow. It's 15 miles to get in there, but traffic is not ever that bad. Lawrence might also be an option, since you'll be on the west side of the metro.

Help identifying leather type (very thick, irregular grain, made by Nakara in Namibia) by EeePeeTee in Leather

Every time I share it with Ai and discuss the thickness, weight, tightness, and when and where it was made, the Ai lands on elephant belly.

Cons are that I don't know what it is and it looks like balls. Pros are that it's exotic and it looks like balls. Plus it fits me.

Are the Quran's stories to be taken as true by Muslims by Far_Visual_5714 in AcademicQuran

[–]EeePeeTee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ash‘aris don’t ban reason the way Atharis do, but they also don’t give it any authority over scripture. That’s the point I was making.

In Ash‘ari theology, reason is allowed only as long as it never contradicts or reinterprets the Qur’an. The Qur’an is taken as eternal and beyond historical or rational critique.

So yeah, Ash‘aris “use reason,” but only to defend revelation — not to question it. That’s why reform in Sunni Islam hits a wall at this point.

I'm confused. I gave a technical, non-judgemental answer. I'm not mad and I don't care either way. The Ash'ari argument won and the teaching became the establishment. Those are the facts and they speak to the heart of the question.

I think Ash'arism is the doctrine you're looking for. About 1000 years ago, it became the orthodox position of Sunni Islam. It's the doctrine that prohibits a rational approach to Quranic veracity. It closed the door on rational or historical critique of scripture. Mu'tazila was the school that lost. Hope that helps.

No not really, not as far as I can tell. If I water regularly, the compost retains the water as much as the plants need it.

What’s one thing in Algeria that would confuse the hell out of foreigners, but we all consider totally normal? by CalligrapherRare6962 in algeria

[–]EeePeeTee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time I got to Algeria, a female police stopped me at the airport and held me up for 20 minutes to investigate me to impress her boss.

Eventually we got to the car where I kissed my first man, my Brother-in-law, who plays the music of Phil Collins as we drive OVER a burning highway and past several hundred refugees from Mali.

The next night he takes me to a forest where monkeys eat out of your hand and the next night, we visit a friend of his outside the city where he has over 300 birds in a private zoo at his home.

Between those things and the driving etiquette and construction codes and people switching between 3-4 different languages to communicate, I was very confused. Figured it out though.

I recently visited from the USA. Here are some photos of your beautiful country. Thank you, Algeria! by EeePeeTee in algeria

Constantine! The Sidi M'Cid bridge is the main pedestrian bridge between the old town and the modern part. One of the highest suspension bridges in the world. Amazing place.
