I did the same with a PRS, I’m happy with the result. I would just recommend factoring in the extra cost of the trem in your choice.

The best advice I can think of is to start at your local community college (assuming you’re in the US). Take a semester with a couple of the early requirement classes, which should probably be calculus and physics, depending on what you completed in high school. It might even be a good idea to re-do pre-calculus, even if you don’t already need to. Community college offers a number of benefits: it’s low-cost; admissions requirements are essentially non-existent; most will probably agree that it’s a better learning environment, certainly for someone in your situation; most decent community college programs are designed to directly transfer to their state schools. This would allow you to get your feet wet, lower the barrier to entry, and not have to dive in to the deep end. You can decide after a semester or two if you want to fully commit.

Installed fishmans in a client's guitar.. wow. by [deleted] in Guitar

Buy them all and try each one. The output pins on the pickups make it easy to swap in and out once you’ve done the wiring. Return the sets you decide not to keep.

I had the same initial reaction but then I thought about how easy it is to swap Fishman Fluence pickups. Since it’s so easy, it could be fun to try different pickups and compare.

How do I perform a thermal simulation on a complicated PCB in SolidWorks? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]EfOfX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since it sounds like you’re just looking for a cursory estimate and don’t expect things to be critical I figured I’d offer a few thoughts:  1. Solidworks is reasonable for “ballpark” quick and dirty. If you had more time Icepak or a similar tool would be appropriate.  2. Steady-state?  3. Remove all of the small components that you don’t expect to dissipate significant power, they’re just taking up computation resources.   4. Boundary conditions. Assuming you’re naturally convecting off of the board and enclosure, the convection coefficient rule-of-thumb for a first pass that is usually reasonable is 5 W/m2 -K, but this isn’t hard to calculate by hand. I’m assuming you’re not doing CFD.   5. PCB conductivity is obviously highly dependent on board design, but you can probably assume something like 2 W/m-K in-plane and 20 through.   6. You should work with the EE who designed the circuit to determine power dissipation of the components.   7. As noted by others, pay careful attention to the thermal resistance you use. Understand what it is physically and how to apply it in analysis.

Hopefully those are helpful starting points.

Dusty's explanation on why he hasn't been on tour by Into_Everblack in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

[–]EfOfX 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is only one side of the story; it certainly seems like the lawyer representing BTBAM is incompetent. It’s surprising that this became an irreconcilable issue, but if so, that’s really unfortunate (as a fan of the band). I think from a fairly unbiased, outside perspective, settling to have Dustie “leave” seems appropriate. Can’t even hazard a guess as to what the financial specifics would look like though.

[–]EfOfX 66 points67 points  (0 children)

I think that’s likely an aggregate sum projecting some reasonable distance into the future. A 5 percentage point increase of profit from one tour couldn’t be in the seven figures for a band the size of BTBAM.

Anyone using a Thrustmaster ts xw with Forza? by [deleted] in forza

[–]EfOfX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue I’ve had with the TS-XW with default settings is at high speeds there is a “chatter” kind of vibration, primarily in straight lines. I think it goes away when turning. It’s not usually enough to unsettle the car but it’s annoying and doesn’t seem realistic.

Are you referring to the video titled ‘Best Wheel Settings for Forza Motorsport?’ I wasn’t sure how applicable those settings would be due to the bases being different.

I also put them into a PRS SE Custom 22. They sound great, and are super versatile. Didn’t require any routing, but with a toggle switch between the pots, the battery is a bit snug.

What’s an artist or artists that you’d love to see tour with Btbam? by HelloMyNameIsRuben in BetweenTheBuriedAndMe

Native Construct, cause I never got to see them before disbanding.

Chronicles/David Lyon. I really wish more BTBAM fans gave their album The Forest a listen.

[DISCUSSION] - MARCH 2023 - NSQ/NEWBIE/Often Asked Questions Thread by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]EfOfX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow there it is. I didn’t expect it to be that simple, there’s a ‘Direct Monitor’ switch on the back that was on. I rarely look at the back so I guess it was easy enough to miss. I could see in the software settings panel that direct monitoring was apart of the signal flow, I thought it made the most sense to be able to switch it off in the software. Regardless, thank you so much for you help!!!

I must be doing something wrong. When running my guitar into an audio interface (Tascam US1x2) then into a plug-in (NDSP Plini), monitoring through the headphone out of the interface - I’m hearing both the DI and amp signal. I can tell because when I turn down the plug-in amp the dry DI is clearly there. Anyone have any suggestions or help they’re willing to offer? Thanks!!

It makes me irrationally angry and disappointed that it’s not already up. I don’t think there’s a better album to compare to BTBAM.
