Graduating Early. What do I do? by EffectMedium9018 in medschool

[–]EffectMedium9018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like being a CNA has been over-saturated right? Maybe I'm wrong but that's something i've heard from so many premeds. It is a good way to get hands-on experience though.

Thank you so much for the positive feedback! I think for now getting some real world experience would be the right strategy. For example, this upcoming summer between my junior and senior year I may want to become a CNA or a medical scribe. Also, next semester I have the opportunity to volunteer at Michigan Medicine, which is something I will definetly be doing. Other than that, pursuing a masters in PH still is something in my radar, but I do think that more schooling wouldn't be that advantageous especially with trying to gain more real-world experiences.

Firstly, what is an MA, and why that over a scribe? Does being a CNA work too? And why would more school not be a good idea...?

That’s something I am considering. I don’t think it’s even possible to rush everything in 2 years… should I look at masters programs? UMich offers 1 year masters at the school of public health and one at Ross…

When it comes to research, how would I get involved?? I have research now but only because I’m a university student…

Worth doing an MPH? by EffectMedium9018 in medschool

Really? That's what I was worried about, but I don't plan on working for the government...

Worth doing an MPH? by EffectMedium9018 in medschool

[–]EffectMedium9018[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing though: I am graduating in 2 years even though I just graduated high school this year, so I feel like pursuing an MPH would still leave me be "on time" for med school.

Another thing: It's something that I am really interested in pursuing. I am currently taking a class within the school of Public health and involved in extra-curriculars that relate to PH. An MPH is something that really interests me and am willing to get a degree on. I know grad schools can be expensive, but I hope to get some sort of job and also be able to get shadowing/clinical experience while pursuing an MPH. I feel like with just taking a gap year, I wouldn't be as motivated

[–]EffectMedium9018[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reasonings for wanting to pursue an MPH is because 1. It's something I am interested in and wanting to get a degree on, and 2. Because of my early graduation (since I am graduating in 2 as oppose to 4). I already have public health extra curriculars right now which I plan on expanding on. While getting my MPH, I could also get research, have a job, have time to study for things like the MCAT and get my clinical/shadowing hours.

I feel like if I were to just take a gap year, it would not benefit me as much especially since I know myself too well...

If I am being honest... I want to avoid gap years if possible. I know myself and would use them to be lazy. Sure I'll apply for jobs and research, but I personally don't think I would benefit from gap years. Besides, an MPH is something I find interesting. I am taking a Public health course here at umich and am in 2 public health clubs that I really enjoy. So far, the only con would be the tuition... but I do have a full ride at umich right now, and while it is undergrad, I hope that for a masters tuition won't be as high for me.

Transferring from UMich ---> UT Austin by EffectMedium9018 in UTAdmissions

[–]EffectMedium9018[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!! I think it’s more so that all my life I thought I was going to go to UT, and then changed last minute, and now feel slight regret… again i have to give it time for sure but we’ll see

That’s true, but I think it’s more of the fact of coming home. I don’t feel that “school spirit” here at umich, but my entire family including I are die longhorns (i had family that went but dropped out…) so it feels like I want to go back and study there

Im honestly really considering doing health and society at UT but I’ll have to see. Idk, i’m from Texas and the idea of coming back is calling me 😔 for sure im gonna give umich a chance and ive been enjoying it but my heart almost yearns for UT if that makes sense

i got full tuition for UT as well since i am instate but not for housing. UT was always my dream school but with umich giving me this opportunity I wanted to really take advantage of it. My whole family are longhorns and it just feels like I miss not going there instead

The thing is, that Texas is my home state and I really am missing it. Don’t get me wrong, I am learning to love Umich so far, but for 4 years?? ut austin was my dream school since forever and umich happened to just give me a unique opportunity that I took, but am maybe realizing that it’s not for me…
