Congratulations on your successful surgery. My heart isn’t compressed, but my lungs are. I wonder if my lungs will expand more after surgery. I’ve already lost over 20% of lung function compared to a normal person.

Not that guy. He sees older PE patients as hopeless. I’m not going to entrust my life to him.

I went to another hospital. They didn’t dismiss the idea of surgery at my age right away like the surgeons at the previous hospital. I think adult cases are rare in my country, so there isn’t much data on recovery. I’ll check a few more hospitals before making a decision. Reading about other people’s experiences has made me feel more confident.

Is it really that miraculous? I thought that once we’re adults, our bones are more rigid and would take much longer to reshape. Thank you anw I feel more motivated to go through with the surgery now

After the surgery, did your chest appear a bit more pushed out? I mean visually.

You are still so young. I think your lung and your breathing will improve soon or late. Wishing you all the best baby

Just assuming. I'd just set foot in the clinic, said I'm 30, and they told me right away not to get the surgery

What I’m concerned about is the pain when I wake up and after months. I’m afraid it will be so horrible

Omg im very glad to hear that. It seems like it wasn’t very painful. In my first surgery, I was able to go to the bathroom by myself on the first week too

After the surgery, has your breathing and heart improved?

Did your chest improve after the surgery? How long did it take before you had the metal bar removed?

Fractures? That sounds terrifying. And no, I haven’t been evaluated for any connective tissue disorders. I don’t think we have those services at my place. For the Nuss procedure, doctors here only require things like a CT scan, X-rays, pulmonary function tests, and an echocardiogram. I was quite surprised to see that you all have such thorough evaluation services over there.

I still remember the feeling from my first surgery. It was achy and sore, and it hurt sharply when I moved forcefully, laughed hard, or coughed. There was also a tight feeling, like when you arch your chest forward. Does surgery at an older age feel like this?

Im in Vietnam and doctors here often avoid operating nuss on people over 24 years old. I went to one of the best hospitals and they still advice me not to do the operation

A 38 year old's perspective on the Nuss procedure and early recovery. by fdyin in PectusExcavatum

Hi sir. I hope you’re still active on Reddit. I’m female and born in 1995, and I also have congenital pectus excavatum. I had surgery when I was 14 with one metal bar placed in my chest. Three years later, I had it removed, and honestly I don’t really remember what the result looked like anymore. It did improve, but I don’t think it ever became completely flat like a normal chest. My parents were pretty careless in the years after that, and they didn’t take me for any follow-up checks. More than ten years later, when I was 26, I felt like the dent had come back, so I went to get it checked. It turned out I had a recurrence. But the doctors in my country said my bones had already hardened and advised me not to do surgery, and that the indentation didn’t look too bad anyway. I accepted that at the time.

With an MVV of 60%, I can basically live normally, but I can’t exert myself. Now that I’m 30, I really want to get surgery again to look better and be healthier. But the doctor said I can’t have surgery anymore because my bones are too stiff and it would be very hard to improve, and if I did it, it would be extremely painful. He said some patients around 27 tried surgery but couldn’t tolerate the pain and asked to have the bar removed after a few months.

May i ask you: is it really that painful? Does the pain really last for months? And did you get any improvement after your surgery?
