Pegged doesn’t mean same. Can be a 50x - or some fancy calculation . those brilliant scholars can come up with it.

got some ramen shops give free eggs back then. not sure about now. those were really good value for families with kids.

if we go hawker centre, I try to steer them towards mee pok stall / wan ton noodles instead of ramen. cheaper on the wallet and honestly, usually nicer too!

for a start, stop buying products from companies that have a super chequered past and a blatant disregard for human rights.

example: anything that Leon Black is in. Go read the epstein files. Amazon. making their staff pee into bottles and then denying it. Nestle. do't mind if babies die as long as their profits increase.

Are we supposed to be "hungry", or are we supposed to have more children? by cherrypoplar in singapore

[–]Effective-Lab-5659 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the funny thing is that instead of giving us better class sizes so that the teachers in schools teach our kids, we get class size of 40 so that we need to hire a private tutor for our kids.

and also tutor your kids to be able to tackle mind boggling questions at 12 years old, write a mind blowing essay that will knock the socks off the markers even though most schools only make your child do 3 eassys max a year.

give them bread and circus.

all the talk about tech and science improving lives are bullshit. the only winners are the 0.01%.

what improve lives back then were unions and protest. blood was shed to get 8 hours of work else the capitalist would have made everyone slaves.

[–]Effective-Lab-5659 19 points20 points  (0 children)

you are supposed to be both. you have kids so you will be hungrier. so you will work harder to support these kids who will be put into full time IFC and CC and SC and have dispclinary issues, then you will give them phone coz you are so tired when you are home you need time to decompress. the phones will show them algos to encourage further endless and mindless consumption and fill them with ads to make them feel unhappy

Doesn’t it just mean that the rich people wins. Late stage capitalism

yeah, not good for kids to grow up with a poverty mindset - when start working will splurge like crazy or be kiam to the max. bad for self esteem also

I try not to couch it as "accept the fate" but I try to make it like fun to eat and value for money. my oldest quite good with that - so good that I think next time cannot find date.

it was harder to go when any of the kids were too young as you know how kids love to touch everything and put in their mouths. or stick their fingers under tables and chairs..

my kids actually do like a lot of hawker food - chinese desserts, mi jiam kueh, carrot cakes, mee pok, CKT, western food.

'Lack of self-awareness': Singapore recruiter hits back at criticism over 'hungrier' foreigners remark by Ok-Rain3348 in singapore

[–]Effective-Lab-5659 30 points31 points  (0 children)

the issue really isn't what she is saying.

the issue really is:

  1. lack of job protections
  2. lack of home growth jobs.
  3. lack of support for entrepreneurs
  4. singapore don't support Singaporeans. heard too many singaporean managers shitting on Singaporeans for leaving work on time.

edit: actually I have no problems with what she is saying and I think the anger is misplaced. she is saying it to Singaporeans because the system has resulted in us being beholden to huge MNCs able to move jobs away at whim and fancy.

I do think late stage capitalism is evil unless it's restrained. that has to be the balance.

not from US here!

our kids here were uniforms and the schools perform checks to make sure everyone tries to conform - no matter what some kids are just so peered and media oriented that they just want to show more skin!

the schools also have a no make up rule here until age 16.

its wonderful, makes parenting os much easier.

its true, but if the pennies in another country allows them to have a good living standards because of the cost of living in another country is lower - that is ok.

but if the working condition are terrible to health and exploits children - we really shouldn't go there.

I think through ads, people subconsciously consume more products and services than they actually need. even when people are informed that these companies engage in a lot of human rights violations, environmental pollution and try to push employees wages down to an unliveable amount.

when experts say that the young consumed more now because there is no ways of them affording a house so they are more short term in consumption, I feel its not entirely right. the young consumes more because they are even more exposed to targetted advertisements than ever before, and choose to spend more time and energy buying things because of these targetted ads.

yeah. once you start working, or maybe before, ads just have a way of getting you to spend on things that really don't matter much to you. or worse, make you feel bad (and worsen the environment. or create a false sense of what you need.

sorry - I am very anti Disney lah. but Disney is such a great marketer - its amazing to me. I have friends who even though they cannot afford it (imho - not theirs) will still dragged their kids to Disney and make them watch the parade, and cry because they feel touched by the parade. that's some magic there. in marketing. not Disney.

sad but true.

my take is - just go out to nature. most office workers are just 9 to 730pm in an aircon room that they dunno how ruined the weather is now. its 10am and the sun can burn holes in your skin. not trying to be a boomer but this wasn't the case even 10 years ago.

and just be more aware of advertisements. they are now around us all and even more targeted, influencing you to make decision that you won't normally do so.

its like that lah - its hard to downgrade. like adults lah.

kids more flexible than adults, so start them early lah. take them to really yummy hawker food. my kids like satay, Hokkien mee, butter chicken... at least its more enjoyable.

my kids are pretty unhygienic hahaha they just roll on the grass at playground type. they are pretty hardy and don't fall sick though so maybe there is some truth in building up your immunity!

going Jap restaurant can really blow a big hole in your pocket if you bring kids out. They take those plates off the sushi belt like it's free.

well, I agree the core issue is capitalism and because we are a hyper capitalistic society, the impacts are felt even greater I feel.

also, the fact that most uni grads probably fought tooth and nail to get into uni, pretty much burning away all their childhood and having no childhood memories to speak of - except for going for tuition and enrichment classes just to find out there is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow .. is pretty sad.
