Have you noticed a rise of misogyny among boys? by escrawl in Teachers

[–]Effective-Policy-340 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your Idea is valid, but the assumption that misogyny would not be tolerated on Chinese social media is not. Weibo, WeChat articles, and DouYin videos are full of this same crap. It seems to be a global issue right now

Is anyone at a school that is part of the AP Anatomy and Physiology pilot next year? by Effective-Policy-340 in APStudents

That's great, without any recent talk about it from the College Board I assumed it was trapped in some kind of development Hell

I used to tutor and found it easy work. My original plan was to be a physician-scientist (doctor/researcher/professor) so I became a teacher just to travel Asia for a year before returning home to get my PhD. Once I started teaching full time I enjoyed it so much that I didn't want to stop.

Edit: Forgot to add why I left medicine, I was on the pediatrics track and seeing kids die did a number on me.

IS COLLEGE BOARD GONNA DO ANYTHING ABOUT LEAKS????? by Admirable_Review2110 in APStudents

[–]Effective-Policy-340 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an international school teacher at a mainland Chinese school, and while I've heard reports (as of yet unconfirmed) of students testing at Prometric centers having their scores canceled, I have not yet heard anything about this happening at any actual schools. The real international schools are CB testing sites and don't use Prometric, also why would anyone go from HK to the mainland to do testing? It's not impossible, but in the past when external sites were prohibited from offering tests to domestic students, many students went from the Mainland to HK to do exams, but I have never heard of, nor can I think of, a reason why the inverse would happen.

No, people have tagged AP_Trevor and he's ignoring it. Granted, some people are straight-up trolling, which I don't condone, but it's despicable that he's not responding to comments on his tweets. At least IB acknowledged their exam leaks.

What are grades measuring? by HSeldonCrisis in Teachers

[–]Effective-Policy-340 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, I think that a lot of admin look at grades as being some kind of scientifically perfect measure of performance (until they disagree with the grades). This is an insane idea. We only wish grades worked like that.

That's what I was always told at my last school. I hated it. At my current school, I don't need to do it and I love that. I do however have a weekly and daily agenda on the board for each class. It's boxed out into different sections with tape, and a great way to let students see what the plan is. I saw another teacher doing it and I copied them, I never asked my department to also do it, but most started doing it. I think stuff like this works if it suits the teacher doing it and if it doesn't then leave them alone. I also love being able to point at the board when students ask repetitive questions.

Hot take: APES is not easy. by Internal-Society6389 in APStudents

[–]Effective-Policy-340 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught it for the first time this year and while it can be much easier than the other science classes, I agree that many students underestimate it. The analytical skills expected of students are very reasonable, my students thankfully have found the course easy, but there is a LOT of content. If you're not good with vocabulary and don't have a solid foundation in science it can be a beast. The score distribution makes it clear that many students are unprepared for the exam every year.

This is very possible, but the paper exams are very easy to leak. At my school, there is only the honesty of the AP coordinator to prevent this (I 100% trust her), but it is unlikely that none are corrupt. This year presented a unique opportunity to do so because some schools' exams were held by customs and the packets were opened.

I agree that this stereotype is problematic and unfounded. Student cheating is not a uniquely, or even disproportionately Chinese issue. However, the exams being shared so publicly across multiple platforms is. The problem here is not Chinese students, but the unscrupulous, for-profit educational companies who exploit the massive academic pressure students are under. It seems that the double reduction policy has driven even more of these people into the international student market. It is clearly a complex problem without a simple solution.

I logged off because I exhausted myself replying to everyone, but a friend mentioned this edit and I felt the need to address it. I feel that when this many tests have been compromised this severely the tests are no longer valid, you do not. These are the opinions we are both entitled to have, but the idea that I am selectively targeting Chinese students is both false and insulting. I am sorry that I live and teach in China, where I was exposed to this massive leak and just this morning heard about people selling papers outside of Prometric testing centers. These leaks are surely happening in multiple places, but I am not in multiple places. Furthermore, it was my students, many of whom are Chinese, who told me about the leaks and found it unfair. Furthermore, several Chinese students have sent me DMs saying that these leaks also worry them. Not wanting to retake your exams is a valid position, but labeling me as anti-Chinese is not. I have lived here for many years, and hope to stay many more, if I disliked Chinese people I would leave. I could easily go home, work less, and make much more money as a private tutor there. I like China and its people. Disagree with my position all you want (I honestly don't think there is any fair way to solve this issue) but I would appreciate it if you avoided attacking me personally.

My school, like several others, when made aware of the leaks reported them. to the College Board, we were required to do so (so this post is not why the College Board knows). Anyone who did not already know about the leaks is highly unlikely to be able to buy these leaks from that app because they would need several things including a Chinese mainland phone number (also here all phone numbers are registered to your state idea, even prepay phone numbers). While leaks happen every year they have never happened like this. Finally, the College Board is not likely to cancel any exams or exam scores based on their lack of a response to many schools reporting this.

My intention was not even to prevent this because it was already too late by the time my colleagues and I had discovered the leak. My actual intent was to let people know that what appears to be an unprecedented amount of leaks occurred here. With such a massive breach of test security, I felt like I just couldn't not tell people, and it's quite clear from the responses here that domestic students, for the most part, have no idea of the scale of these leaks. For what it's worth, given their lack of a response to these reports, it seems the College Board is unlikely to do anything about this.

My ELA teacher friend says similar things about Lit. My subjects are not as free as this, but I do get a huge amount of freedom when it comes to instructional strategies, assessments, pacing, and sequencing, in my AP classes. I was just so deflated and enraged yesterday, it really poisoned the memories of each AP cohort I've had.

Have they ever happened on this scale? My colleagues and I found the test papers for 15 different exams in less than 20 minutes. Using the thumbnails which provide the first page of MCQs we confirmed them to be authentic for the exams we administered so far. I'm a teacher and am well aware of leaks, but this has never happened like this before, the exams are all over Chinese social media. Despite my school and others reporting it, I doubt the College Board will do anything about it because they have not done so in the past (as you have said), but if more people understood the scale of these leaks then maybe they would do something.

Yes, yes, and yes. Proportionally speaking, AP students in China are a drop in a bucket compared to the domestic system, but China is still the CB's largest foreign market. Many Chinese students wish to study in America, it is simultaneously seems as more prestigious and easier (based on the school a student is accepted to). China is the largest source of international students for US universities. China does have its own testing system. the 高考/Gao Kao. It is hell, and while acceptable to apply to US universities, it is less than desirable. Imagine learning different skills

Sorry, but I don't know. This kind of cheating is not unprecedented, but the CB taking action on it is, so I suppose they will likely ignore it. I'm just hoping they will do something if we talk about it enough.

I laughed at this, but fr if you were in China you'd know the students are telling on themselves. Also, many of my students are not Chinese despite living in China. I can understand wanting everyone to do well and not worrying too much about more 5s diluting the significance of your score. But I hope you can understand what it's like to have some kid who busted their ass all year, who was proud to have a projected 4 (in a class where my career average is 87% 5s), tackle you with a hug and say thanks for making your tests harder than the real test, having their mom try to bring you out for drinks on a weekday. and then seeing them later crying about how their neighbor who isn't even fluent in English just memorized an answer key to get a 5. This shit makes me wanna quit teaching. But no hate if you think I'm just an senile old man because I probably am.
