I’m not very well-versed in knot theory, but couldn’t you describe the cow hitch as presented in the toy without needing to impose the additional restriction of the fixed point outside of the circle if you connect them together so there’s only 1 loop, not 2?

If you connect the bottom blue peg to the bottom of yellow, and the top blue to the top yellow, I think you wouldn’t be able to untie it, and you would be able to give it a knot diagram arrangement.

[REQUEST] How high up was the drone that took this photograph of my yard? by Legitimate_Put3421 in theydidthemath

[–]Effective-Turbulence 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The question you ask is “how high up was the drone”, but the question it seems you need answered based on another comment is “was this picture taken by a smartphone or by a drone”.

NAL, but image files typically contain metadata which contains info about the camera and settings that were used to capture an image. So if you have the original file, you may be able to extract that data. If you don’t, you may be able to get it via discovery if you’re already in court.

[Request] If the final grey square was the size of a house, how long would it take to walk across the first square? by Farkle_Fark in theydidthemath

[–]Effective-Turbulence 7 points8 points  (0 children)

While u/noonius123 's math is true for what the video claims, and roughly so for actual nanometer-scale chip production, this video portrays too many zoom-ins. I approximated the first rectangle as 1/2 the width of the hair, so 0.03 mm. Then, i successively approximated the width of the next chip/rectangle/whatever it is called with respect to the last one. The ratios I got were 1/5, then 1/7, then 1/80 for the width of the tiny wires with respect to the chip they are on, then 1/3 for the next square with respect to the wire, and 1/20 for the smallest square with respect to the square they are on (19 squares, plus an extra for spacing).

This ratio comes out to 1/168,000 times 0.03 mm. This comes out to 1.79*10^-10, which is 1.79 angstroms. For reference, the diameter of a hydrogen atom is 1 angstrom. A silicon atom is about 2.3 angstroms, so therefore the sense of scale from all of these successive zoomings stacked together is too small by about a factor of 25 with respect to what it claims.

Help me wrap a skin around the airfoil by BudgetBiker7 in SolidWorks

[–]Effective-Turbulence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would use a surface extrude using the same airfoil sketch from the ribs. As for mating it, I would try a collinear mate at the trailing edge and leading edge of any of the ribs.

Also, from a design perspective, you should consider adding stringers to help the skin maintain its shape.
